Global Youth Service Day
A HUGE success!
On Saturday, April 22, 2017 approximately 160 youth and families from the Smithtown township attended the Town of Smithtown's Global Youth Service Day celebration at the beautiful Smithtown Landing Country Club, Merrywood Cottage.
Present were, honored guests, including firefighters, police officers, and EMT's. Eleven Town-wide Letter Writing Contest winners were recognized, and were given the opportunity to read their letters of thanks to the local Emergency Responders.
Outstanding Volunteers from throughout the township were recognized for their community service.
Global Youth Service Day is a worldwide event of activism that empowers youth to take action in their world. Smithtown Youth Bureau is proud to be recognized as a Global Youth Service Day Partner, joining groups from over 136 countries celebrating youth volunteerism.

Babysitting Skills/Basic Child Care Training at
Nessaquake Middle School
The Town of Smithtown Youth Bureau just completed their four week Babysitting Skills Program at Nessaquake Middle School.
Throughout the program, students learned basic child care skills and the responsibilities required to be a successful babysitter or mother's helper. Basic first aid information and safety were also explored by the participants.
Students enjoyed the hands-on experience with our "RealCare Babies." These realistic baby dolls simulate the needs of a "real" baby... crying and needing to be held and changed.
During the last session, many participants expressed how comfortable they feel with the possibility of babysitting this summer.

We'd like to congratulate our partner,
Horizons Counseling and Education Center
on being named
"Social Work Agency of the Year"
by the National Association of Social Workers, New York State Chapter, Suffolk Division.
This award acknowledges the
exceptional social work services
provided by Horizons Center to address the chronic and often tragic causes and consequences of substance abuse in the community.
Horizons regularly works with the Smithtown Youth Bureau, various other community partners, and local school districts to address substance use-related problems and provides prevention, education, and treatment programming.
Horizons Counseling & Education Center and the Smithtown Youth Bureau recently revitalized the
Youth and Community Alliance of Smithtown
for the purpose of engaging and mobilizing residents and other stakeholders to work toward positive changes in Town of Smithtown communities. The Alliance areas of focus include; substance abuse, bullying/cyberbullying, and maintaining healthy relationships.

May is Bicycle Safety Month! By law, all bicyclists under the age of 14 are required to wear approved bicycle helmets when bicycling or riding as passengers on bicycles in New York State. The maximum penalty for an offense is a $50 fine. Regardless of the age and fine, you only have one head! Wearing a helmet the correct way can cut your risk of a head injury in half! In order to assure you and your children's helmets fit properly, follow these simple guidelines:
- Your helmet should fit level on your forehead (not too far forward or not too far back)
- Your helmet should be snug. One finger should fit between the chin and chin strap.
- Shake your head, if the fit is right, your helmet will stay on tight.

STUDENT VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT!
Congratulations to Jessica Lavenda from Commack High School! Jessica is the recipient of a $1,000 Allstate Safe Driving Activist Award through her work with SADD and the Smithtown Youth Bureau Safe Routes to School Program.
Jessica, a senior at Commack High School and SADD Executive Board Member, was trained by the Smithtown Youth Bureau and Stony Brook Hospital staff to present a Peer-to-Peer program on reckless and distracted driving. The program, called "What Do You Consider Lethal", was presented to over 300 sophomores during their health classes over a 2-day period.
Jessica, along with other members of SADD, did an outstanding job sharing the message as to the dangers of reckless and distracted driving during April's National Teen Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Congratulations, Jessica!!!
