30th Annual Go West Summit
Salt Lake City - Host to Another Olympic Winter Games?
In 2002, Salt Lake hosted one of the most successful Winter Olympics in history, including a $100 million operating budget surplus. Today, ALL of the competition venues are still open and operating, active and part of the Salt Lake community. While a few of the Olympic venues were outside of Utah’s capital city, Salt Lake’s venues included the University of Utah’s Rice-Eccles Stadium (opening & closing ceremonies), Maverik Center (ice hockey), Vivint Smart Home Arena (figure skating and short track speed skating), the Utah Olympic Oval (long track speed skating), and the Salt Palace Convention Center (Main Media Center/International Broadcast Center).

Currently, the U.S. Olympic Committee has focused its attention on the 2024 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, yet there is definitely talk about Salt Lake City hosting the 2026 or 2030 Winter Games. There are numerous World Cup events in Utah every winter, including the FIS Freestyle & Snowboard World Championships in 2019. The 2026 or 2030 Winter Olympic Games may be years away, but Salt Lake and its venues are ready and would make for a strong contender.

During the 2018 Go West Summit, you can visit the Utah Olympic Oval, meet with former Freestyle Olympian, Shannon Bahrke, watch speed skating athletes train for the 2018 Olympics and even try curling for yourself, a truly unique experience you won’t want to miss.

Discover Montana!
Also referred to as “Big Sky Country,” Montana’s wide horizons and epic mountain vistas are evident throughout the state, especially where the high peaks of the Rockies hint at spectacular scenery yet to be discovered.

Two national parks anchor Montana—Glacier to the northwest and Yellowstone to the south. These parks and the other natural wonders between them, including 15 wilderness areas and numerous national and state forests, show why Montana is America’s Last Best Place. Glacier’s 52-mile (83 km) Going-to-the-Sun Road spans Glacier National Park and crosses the Continental Divide at Logan Pass, offering breathtaking views and opportunity to see wildlife along the way.

The great variety of activities in Montana will surprise you. Follow the Montana Dinosaur Trail, a network of 14 sites featuring some of the world’s greatest paleontology finds set amongst vast plains and rugged badlands. Visit Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, the site of Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer’s Last Stand as he battled the Sioux and Cheyenne under the leadership of Sitting Bull. Montana’s ghost towns hint at long-ago days of the gold rush, while rafting and hiking can be enjoyed on numerous lakes, rivers and trails throughout the state.

Winter activities in Montana can be as adventurous as you like. Your options include ski, dogsled, snowshoe, or snowmobile. Travelers more inclined to the colder months of the year will find some of the best skiing available at Montana’s 15 ski areas, including Whitefish Mountain Resort in the northern part of the state and Big Sky Resort in the south near Yellowstone National Park.
Why Oregon?
Because Oregonians are wild, adventurous and inquisitive. Oregon is a place where people often find themselves roaming endlessly with no other goal than the next great meal, powdery slope, lighthouse view or salmon run. And in this mythical landscape sits two iconic features: the soaring basalt cliffs forming the tremendous Columbia River Gorge and the snow-capped peak of the state’s highest volcano, Mt. Hood. Within these boundaries, you’ll find no end of delights — towering old-growth forests, gushing waterfalls, spawning salmon and the mighty waters of the river. The valleys and hillsides are dotted with family farms and orchards, where chefs harvest fresh ingredients for their seasonally changing menus. This trove of natural wonders lures folks year-round, but especially in the summer, when crowds can tamper your pursuit of solitude; thankfully, you’ll often find quieter, lesser-known spots just around the corner. We encourage you to approach Oregon the way Oregonians do, with a sense of humor and adventure.
