SMALL BIZ SATURDAY
Small businesses are important because when customers spend where they live, communities get stronger, and main streets stay vibrant.

This Saturday November 26th celebrate the importance of small businesses by shopping local. Invite your friends, family, and customers to Shop Small and show their love for small businesses.

We have lots of Shop Small goodies for our business members. To get customized marketing material, please click here. If you would like some goodies to host a "Shop Small" booth at your business center plaza on November 26th, please contact Karina@sdbd.org.

DIAMOND RESOURCES
Addressing Homelessness in District 9

The office of Councilwoman Marti Emerald has teamed up with Alpha Project utilizing Community Projects, Programs, and Services (CPPS) funds to attempt to address the ever increasing homeless population in District 9.

Alpha Project is a non-profit that operates numerous programs serving over 4,000 people daily with the mission of empowering individuals, families, and communities to change their lives and achieve self-sufficiency. The Alpha Project strives not to manage homelessness, but rather to end it for its clients by offering jobs, recovery and support services. A key approach is the Alpha Project's Homeless Outreach Program (HOP). The principle goal is to immediately reduce homelessness for some of San Diego's most vulnerable citizens while positively impacting surrounding communities.

Once hotspots in District 9 are identified, the program will use an outreach van and two-person teams made up of trained personnel, including formerly homeless individuals, to engage and assist the homeless with basic needs, referrals, and housing. Outreach workers will focus on homeless individuals and gain their trust in order to guide them through a low-demand process and facilitate their placement in appropriate programs.

By providing access to care and services, the HOP offers homeless men and women an alternative to frequenting public spaces, such as parks and canyons. Through collaborative public and private partnerships, Alpha Project's HOP provides a direct connection to extensive services that represent cost-saving solutions and give hope to those struggling to survive.

For more information on this project, please contact Marisa Berumen with the Office of Councilwoman Marti Emerald at 619-236-7754 or via email at mberumen@sandiego.gov.
