The History of Muskegon Catholic Central
by Robert Bridges for the Catholic University of America
Catholic Education has been in existence in Muskegon County for well over 100 years.  Beginning shortly after World War II, motivated and passionate Catholics began to organize a campaign to centralize the city's four Catholic High Schools.  The dream became a reality in 1953 with the opening of Muskegon Catholic Central High School.  This paper tells the story of how this epic project was completed and shares the stories of the school's impact throughout its sixty year existence.  Read  here .

Hour of Code
Hour of Code is an initiative that was launched in 2013 by non-profit Code.org to make computer programming more accessible and to raise awareness of the disparity between the need for computer programmers and the low number of students studying computer science. Overall, about 100 million students have been reached by Code.org efforts during annual Hour of Code events since 2013. To read on how MCC is implementing this program click here!
WHO'S ON CAMPUS

Barb (Kolenic) Antekeier '77
Executive Administrative Support

2016 will be my nineteenth year at Muskegon Catholic Central. I began working for the school in 1997 as the Administrative Assistant for the High School Principal, and currently serve as Executive Support for the 7-12 Principal and Head of School.

I graduated from MCC in 1977, where I also met my husband, Kirk Antekeier `75. Kirk works as a Sales Manager in Holland, and we have been married for 35 years. We reside in Norton Shores.

Our two daughters, AlexaRae `04 and Kendall `07, graduated from MCC, and from St. Mary's College at Notre Dame in 2008 and 2011 respectively, and they currently both live in Chicago, IL. AlexaRae is an Associate Vice President and Media Relations Strategist at Finn Partners, a public relations firm. Kendall is a Content Marketing Specialist at Emmi, a healthcare technology company.

Prior to MCC, I began my professional career in Benefit and Human Resource Administration and held the role of Benefit and HR Coordinator for Reid Tool Supply Company for fifteen years.  I began my career in education at Mona Shores High School in 1994 until 1997 when I decided to return "Home" to MCC.

Muskegon Catholic Central has played a crucial role in my life and in the lives of my family, and I'm proud to continue to work for a school that consistently keeps "Faith Moving Forward."

Amy Gawron
P-6 Administrative Assistant

I became a part of the MCC Community first as a student here attending in grades 8,9 & 10 and then as an employee.  After graduating from Albion College with my Elementary teaching certificate, I was hired in 1987 as the PE teacher for St. Francis and St. Michael's Elementary Schools.  The following January I became the first grade teacher at St. Francis de Sales Elementary and stayed in that position for 11 years!  I put my teaching career on hold to raise 4 wonderful children, Jimmy '06, Daniel '09, Elizabeth '12, and Adam '18 with my husband, Jim Gawron '81.  In those years I volunteered a lot at MCC being active in the Elementary Home and School Association and the High School Family Association, Spring Musical parent volunteer, Varsity Soccer Committee member, classroom parent volunteer and room parent, as well as substitute teaching in the elementary, middle school and school offices.  In July of 2012 I was blessed to be hired as the Elementary Office Administrative Assistant!  MCC will always have a special place in my heart.
Paula (Wright) Sullivan '86
7-12 & Athletics Administrative Assistant

I graduated from MCC in 1986 and from MSU in 1990.  I have worked full time at MCC for 3 years although I have coached and volunteered here since graduating from college.  My husband, Bob Sullivan '82 and I just celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary.  We have 4 children - Katelyn '15, Nathan, Brendan and Erin.  I really enjoy working in the 7-12 Office and interacting with the students everyday!

UPDATES
Zack Winzer '15
Muskegon Catholic prepared me for my future by guiding me spiritually, physically and academically. I enjoyed the ability and the encouragement to attend adoration and Mass each week. Some of my best memories were during my time in Wings and being able to lead the younger students during retreats. I participated in Confirmation at St. Mary's as a Wings member and it was a powerful experience to help guide the younger students on this journey. I also enjoyed being able to pray as a team before and after an athletic activity and to enjoy Mass before each football game.

My time in athletics at MCC was an awesome experience. We were blessed with coaches that had great experience and knowledge of the game and cared about the student athlete. The expectations were high but the team as a whole was dedicated to the training and practice that it took to reach our goals. The entire MCC community supports the athletic programs and made it even better to achieve our three state championships during my time at MCC.

The academic preparation that I received was challenging at MCC but was exactly what I needed to pursue my education at a service academy. If I had not been challenged during high school and had high expectations of me, I would not be able to sustain the college work load that I currently have. The teachers at MCC told us what the college expectations would be and taught us how to prepare for those expectations. They often graded our work as they would in a college environment and I believe it prepared us for the next level.

Muskegon Catholic was a great school for me to attend and I am thankful for all of the valuable opportunities that I experienced.
