One of the highlights of 2011 was the visit to Kenema by President Ernest Bai Koroma. The president has been frequenting Kenema recently but on this particular occasion he was here to re-echo from the horse's mouth the mantra which his All Peoples Congress (APC) administration started office with - that his government inherited no money and no economic foundation from the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) administration of former president Ahmed Tejan Kabbah which handed power over to him.

 

The week after his presidential utterance, Finance Minister Samura Kamara hastened to set the records straight, affirming that, contrary to the president, the current APC administration inherited billions of Leones with a very strong economic foundation. This was not surprising as Minister Kamara did not want be dishonest at the expense of his integrity in contradicting previous IMF and World Bank mission reports that predated the APC regime of President Ernest Bai Koroma.

 

Since then, the President Koroma and his Information Minister who have been spinning this mantra in the press have been mute about this subject. But this silence has not stopped tongues wagging across the country that if the president can lie to citizens about a public financial record he inherited, then the same president may have had the ulterior motive of spending the monies he met on shady deals and covering up his action with the lie that he met nothing.
