JTED @ STAR Campus to be Named, Honor Dr. Alan L. Storm

At the suggestion of Pima JTED's former interim superintendent Dr. Marybelle McCorkle, the District's Governing Board unanimously approved naming the new JTED @ STAR campus to honor Superintendent/CEO Alan L. Storm, Ph.D.

Sunnyside Assistant Superindent Dr. Eugenia Favela, who worked alongside Dr. Storm for more than 20 years in SUSD, addressed the Board at their regular October meeting, "Dr. Storm's influence is still felt in the district, because of his strong advocacy for all students, of student health and well-being, his support of nurses, counselors, early  childhood -- the list goes on and on." She added, "We all feel that Dr. Storm is still a part of us, and his name on the JTED building will bring everything full circle."

Dr. Storm, obviously touched by the sentiment during the meeting, was soon laughing with Board members as they tossed around possible names such "Storm Center" and "The Eye of the Storm."

ESB Design+Build is constructing the nearly 7,000 square-foot facility at 5093 S. Liberty Avenue. It will house two classrooms and a large shop area for JTED Central Construction and Heavy Equipment Operations programs.

It's Ok for Students to Doze in Class

Students enrolled in the JTED Heavy Equipment Operations program are using dozers, skidsteers, backhoes, and various other pieces of machinery to prepare construction sites and parking lots. In addition to attending class for four hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the students spend eight hours two Saturdays per month in the field. We caught up with Jennifer Pelayo, a student at STAR Academic Center, and a few of her classmates at the University of Arizona San Xavier Mine as they gained hands-on-experience that is clearing the way for them to succeed in their career choices.

Educators, Business, and Community Leaders Forge 5-Year Strategic Plan
Strategic Plan image

Five committees composed of educators, and members of business and industry will work through November to develop a new five-year strategic plan for the Pima County JTED. A draft will be presented to the district's Business and Industry Council Dec. 5, and to the JTED Governing Board Dec. 13.

The goals that comprise the strategic plan align with the tenets of the district's independent accrediting organization, AdvancED.

  • The Pima JTED will make every relevant career cluster accessible to all students.
  • The Pima JTED will effectively manage a growing, complex, geographically spread-out, and diverse organization.
  • The Pima JTED will establish and implement a performance based, industry-aligned assessment system for each CTE program.
  • The Pima JTED will establish and sustain advocacy groups and partnerships that represent all JTED stakeholders.
  • The Pima JTED will establish a common data collection and distribution process that measures attributes of premier programs, student learning and program effectiveness.

Tucson Classics Car Show Benefits JTED Thanks to Tucson Rotary
JTED booth at Tucson Classics Car Show

More than 135 JTED students, instructors, and staff volunteered at the Rotary Club of Tucson's Tenth Annual Tucson Classics Car Show at the Gregory School on Oct. 15. Pima JTED, Youth on Their Own, GAP Ministries, and The Haven were the beneficiaries of this year's event.

A field of 425 cars vehicles were on display, including our own ambulance, used by our EMT program, and our patrol car, used by our Law, Public Safety and Security students.

Kids of all ages will have a chance to climb through our ambulance again, and to check out our fire engine at the Tucson Police Foundation's Cops and Rodders Car Show at the Kino Sports Complex on Saturday, Nov. 5.
