EXPELLED & AT-RISK STUDENT SERVICES PROGRAM CELEBRATES SUCCESS IN ITS FIRST YEAR!

GSN has the privilege of supporting nine South Central BOCES Districts in meeting the needs of the 15% of their students who are facing the most significant challenges to complete their education. GSN helped the BOCES hire and train three itinerant Advocates who are on-site in each district 1-2 days per week. The major tasks for the advocates include supporting academic goal setting and monitoring, social emotional skill development, and family engagement. Districts and their Advocates achieved the following results in the 2015-2016 school year:
  • SC BOCES EARSS Program served 129 students; 70 referrals due to truancy
  • 6 students were not expelled due to Advocate support/intervening
  • 92 students' parents or families were served through direct contact with Advocates; 63 parents/guardians served reported improved ability to support their child's learning
  • Student supports and referrals were provided for GED services, rape counseling, judicial advocacy, family counseling and parent coaching among others.
  • Work featured in the La Veta, CO Signature newspaper!
GSN is privileged to also be supporting the San Louis Valley BOCES in their EARRS program in 2016-2017. GSN looks forward to helping the programs achieve both impact and sustainability. GSN is seeking funders to partner with the SC BOCES EARRS program to expand mental health and addiction counseling services and service 3 additional rural districts not covered by the grant.

   WGA CELEBRATES FIRST GRADUATING CLASS!

Six years after the launch of WGA by a team including GSN Founder Furman Brown and GSN CEO Wendy Piersee, WGA has its first graduating class!  These graduates dramatically improved what was a decade-long 40-50% graduation rate to one that will fall between 65-74% exceeding the DPS district average of 62%. This higher rate mirrors the accomplishments at Brooklyn Generation Schools where GSN works in another turnaround setting. GSN is grateful for the foundations, donors, community groups and volunteers that made this work possible, changing the trajectories for hundreds of underserved students. NEW TURNAROUND LEADERSHIP PROGRAM IN PLACE!

Due to GSN's success with helping failing schools to turn around, GSN continues to pursue opportunities to undertake what is likely the most challenging and yet highly rewarding work in the education sector. To that end, in addition to being approved by CDE to provide a graduate certificate in Turnaround Leadership  in partnership with CSU-Global and Battelle for Kids, GSN has become the Official Turnaround Partner for Ignacio School District 11-JT.

Additionally, GSN would like to congratulate two CREC districts on being awarded CDE Turnaround Pathways grants! Congrats to CO Rural Collaborative districts Huerfano and S. Conejos on winning CDE Turnaround Pathways grants!
