CELEBRATING A SUCCESSFUL RURAL TEACHER RECRUITMENT IMMERSION EXPERIENCE IN LA VETA, CO!

Eight teacher candidates participated in a three-day event facilitated by GSN, CSU-Pueblo, and Battelle for Kids in partnership with the La Veta RE-2 School District and the SC BOCES. The second of three immersion experiences, which are a potential answer to the state-wide teacher shortage, kicked off on September 14th. Teacher candidates spent time touring La Veta, meeting with the superintendent, local real estate agents, and school board members to learn more about the area. They also participated in homecoming week activities with the community and even helped build floats for the parade! GSN's Kathryn Allison supported the immersion experience to provide professional development in Team Building (part of GSN Social Emotional Learning curriculum).  Thanks to the Colorado Department of Higher Education for providing grant funds for this experience!

An additional immersion event will take place October 26-28 in Manzanola, Colorado. It will be tied to the second Colorado Rural Share Fair event in Pueblo where potential teachers will interview with superintendents and principals from rural school districts. Teaching candidates interested in the job fair on October 28, can register here.

GSN EXTENDED LEARNING TIME PARTNER SCHOOL
INNOVATIONS HIGHLIGHTED IN MEDIA

Urban Assembly School for Applied Math and Science (UA AMS) has been in the news recently for some of their amazing work around Umoja and Nia: leadership programs centered on bolstering students sense of self through cohort-focused, social emotional interventions. These two enrichment programs--geared toward young men and women, respectively--were designed to empower at-risk young people with the voice, tools, and leadership skills needed to be not only academically successful in high school, but also college and career ready. WNYC, New York's flagship public radio station that broadcasts NPR programming, highlighted this South Bronx school's innovative approach to supporting at-risk youth. Follow the link to hear the four-minute radio spot. Congratulations on your good work!
