Dear Community,

Happy New Year and thank you for your support of the North Royalton Schools this past year.  As I reflect back on 2014, our vision of identifying individual student needs and providing support of those needs was at the forefront of our daily tasks.

Our state report card showed the progress that we have made as a district and our Performance Index of 107.3 placed us in the top 10 of the 31 districts in Cuyahoga County (9th specifically).

At the same time, we operated at one of the lowest cost per pupil expenditures in the county (26/31).  This can be attributed to the dedicated staff, involved parents and supportive community.  As I have said before, the proverb "it takes a village to raise a child" is certainly on display in the North Royalton Schools.

As we move forward into 2015, we will have challenges to face and I know that we will work tirelessly to meet those challenges and continue to provide a top-notched education to our students.  Working together as a community, we will continue to inspire and empower learners!

I wish you all the best for the coming year and beyond.  Thank you for your support of our students and our programs.

Greg Gurka
Superintendent
North Royalton City Schools

Facilities Update: North Royalton City Schools is Moving Forward in Development of New Facility Taskforce

The North Royalton City Schools is moving forward on creating a new Facility Taskforce, charged with the task of determining the best method to address the districts facility needs based on current and future educational demands, and develop a new plan that is accepted by the community.  North Royalton resident and school parent Vince Weimer has been named the chairman of the taskforce.

"The community needs to come together to determine what it is they expect from their schools and their facilities," said Superintendent Greg Gurka.  "This task force, driven by community members, will explore all options and examine the educational needs of the facilities as well as the structural needs."

The task force will consist of a cross section of the community with all sub-groups represented-parents, non-parents, senior citizens, business owners, booster group members, PTA, religious leaders, and city government representatives.  They will hold community meetings and focus groups, examine the facilities, look at past facilities plans, evaluate the needs of educating students, and ensure our facilities support the educational needs of today and in the future.

"This task force is about bringing our community together to determine a plan ensuring we have the educational facilities needed to maintain North Royalton's high educational performance while being fiscally responsible.  We are going to hear all sides of the community, evaluate previous plans, work with the Ohio Facilities Commission in understanding costs and requirements, and find a plan that ensures the best use of tax payer dollars and a bright future for our school district." said Chairman Vince Weimer.

Meeting times will be set once the committee is formed based on schedules and availability. The new task force hopes to present a final report to the board no later than December 2015.

"The work of this community task force in assessing our facilities' needs, and the conversations that will develop across the district, are essential in bringing our community together in determining the direction we need to take," said North Royalton City School Board President Anne Reinkober.

Interested residents should contact Vincent Weimer at [email protected].

Congratulations First Semester Crystal Starfish Winners!

On December 15, North Royalton City Schools announced the winners of the first semester North Royalton City Schools Crystal Starfish Award presented by the First Federal of Lakewood.

At North Royalton Middle School, band director Mrs. Kelly Fadrowski was presented the Crystal Starfish Teacher Award.  In addition to the award, she also received a $250 professional development grant from First Federal of Lakewood, a $50 gift certificate to Cleats restaurant, flowers and gift certificate from Independence Flowers and Gifts, and a gift basket from Costco.  Fadrowski was nominated by her colleague, Jen Gaydos. An excerpt from her nomination reads:

"The success of our North Royalton band program is remarkable and much of that success can be attributed to the North Royalton Middle School band program. Mrs. Fadrowski teaches her standards and objectives along with a love of music.  She is aware that not all students start in the same place but she believes all students can learn regardless of a disability or difficult life situation.  She has helped autistic students learn to play instruments.  She even took the time to find instruments for students to borrow when their families were unable to afford it.  She advocates for students within her department and leads by example.  She truly is a model teacher at the middle school."

"Getting to recognize deserving members of the North Royalton City Schools is one of my favorite things to do as superintendent," said Greg Gurka, superintendent of the North Royalton City Schools.  "Today, two deserving staff members have the opportunity to be showcased for their hard work and dedication to the children of North Royalton City Schools."

Officer Jon Karl from North Royalton High School was the recipient of the Crystal Starfish Support Staff Award.  He works at the high school, and the other buildings as a safety resource officer. Along with the award, he received a $50 gift certificate to Cleats restaurant, flowers and gift certificate from Independence Flowers and Gifts, and a gift basket from Costco.  Karl was nominated by the high school counseling department.  An excerpt from his nomination reads:

"Jon's dedication is warm and inviting to staff, students, parents and community members.  It seems like Jon is never off the clock! He is always there even after a long day of work and he never complains that he's tired.  He is an outstanding police officer and a delight to work with daily.  Jon is an amazing person, police officer and colleague! On a rating scale, he would definitely have earned five golden stars-or bear paws!"

"North Royalton Schools is all about great employees and students which makes North Royalton a great community to live in," said Bob Stefanik, mayor of North Royalton after Jon Karl received his award.

"The First Federal of Lakewood Crystal Starfish awards are presented to support staff members and teachers who make a difference in their schools and go above and beyond in all that they do," said Tiffany Cardenas, branch manager of First Federal of Lakewood in North Royalton.  "Our bank is proud to sponsor this award and give the opportunity to our teachers and staff to shine."
