Summer Camp Highlights

Camp PAL got off to a great start with the Jacksonville Children's Commission and the Mayor's office holding a press conference on June 21 at our Eastside PAL location to highlight the importance of high-quality summer learning camps, such as Camp PAL. Learning camps like PAL's reduce the chance of an educational gap during summer break. The children were treated to a robotic demonstration presented by the UNF School of Engineering, rocket launching activities with the Girl Scouts of Gateway Council and a presentation on electricity by JEA.

The kids are having a blast here at Camp PAL learning all about S.T.E.A.M. A few of the field trips they have experienced include Lego Land, The Jacksonville HIT Center and the Publix Cooking School. One of the most exciting trips was spent splashing around at the Arc Project's Surf Camp!

The campers have had some exciting visitors over the last couple of weeks. The Northside Camp received a visit from "Germaine the Germ" who taught them how to prevent the spread of germs. The campers at Westside had a lesson on "Stranger Danger" from Officer Friendly. The Monument campers learned about different habitats while visiting with some interesting animals from Zoofari. The campers at R.L. Brown learned how eating healthy can be fun by making sure to include lots of colorful fruits and veggies in every meal. PAL Summer Camps are sponsored in part by grants received by the Jacksonville Children's Commission.

A Message From a Camp PAL Parent:

Laroda Barne's son, Christopher, attends Camp PAL at R. L. Brown. She sent in a letter recently explaining how much Christopher enjoys camp this year. "He has vowed not to miss a day; in fact, he is so excited about the prospect of going each day that he lays his clothes out the night before!" Thank you Ms. Barnes for sharing, we love to hear when are campers are having fun!

Newsroom Street Fight
The 2nd Annual Newsroom Street Fight was a success! Eight local newsrooms faced off "Ron Burgundy" style in a double elimination dodge ball tournament. This Anchorman themed dodge ball tournament began as a joke on Twitter between the local news stations last year and turned out to be a very successful fundraiser for PAL. WOKV came out on top walking away with the "Golden Trident" award for winning the tournament and the Most Money Raised award; they raised a total of $1,027. UNF Spinnaker came in 2nd place in the dodge ball tournament and won the Best Anchorman Theme Award. The proceeds raised from this event supported the PAL College Scholarship Fund. Five deserving children were awarded a 2-year scholarship to be administered by the Florida State College Foundation through the Take Stock in Children Program. Scholarship recipients were: Nichole Countryman, Tony Paul, Jah Michael Rivera, Lamonta Prewitt and Lonnie Thomas. We appreciate everyone who participated in the 2nd Annual Newsroom Street Fight and we look forward to seeing you again next year!

Athletes With Purpose Youth Conference
The 2nd Annual Athletes With Purpose Youth Conference took place on July 20 at the Eastside PAL football field. Several young athletes joined together for an exciting day of football drills and to learn new speed and agility techniques. This event, hosted by Athletes With Purpose, was developed by former Tampa Bay Buccaneer's Wide Receiver, Frank D. Murphy, who spoke to the children about making good choices and how to stay focus on their goals. Scotty McGee, former player from the Jacksonville Jaguars, also made a special appearance. We would like to thank the sponsors, volunteers, parents and children who participated in this event.

FOP Foundation Presents PAL with Check
The Police Athletic League of Jacksonville received a $20,000 check from the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Foundation of Jacksonville on Thursday, June 20. For over a decade, the FOP foundation has selected PAL as a recipient of their Guns N' Hoses charity fundraiser. Over the last 11 years, the FOP Foundation has contributed more than $500,000 to PAL. Their commitment has made it possible for PAL to provide educational, athletic, mentoring and teen leadership program services to more than 2,800 at risk children annually. Each year, the Foundation makes financial contributions to numerous local charitable organizations from funds collected through officers' payroll deduction and community fundraising events.
