SUNY Chancellor Recognizes Three Old Westbury Students for Academic, Athletic Excellence

Three SUNY College at Old Westbury students are among those from SUNY campuses recognized recently by SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher for their achievements in and out of the classroom.

Chancellor Zimpher presented the 2012 Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence to Bilal Butt, a senior majoring in Biological Sciences, and Brian Campbell, a senior majoring in Adolescence Education: Social Studies (7-12) at a recent ceremony in Albany, and later announced that Michael Bayne, a sophomore majoring in Accounting, had earned a 2012 Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete Award.

"The students we honor today have taken full advantage of the academic and extracurricular programs that SUNY provides both in the classroom and in the community," said Chancellor Zimpher. "These proven leaders, athletes, artists, and civic volunteers truly represent the power of SUNY. I congratulate all of the students being recognized today and thank them for the positive impact each has had on New York State, our university system, and the communities we serve."

Michael Bayne currently maintains both a 3.60 grade point average as an Accounting student and an active roster of extracurricular activities. As a captain for the men's soccer team, he earned All-Skyline Conference First-Team honors. He was named to the Fall 2011 Skyline Conference Scholar Athlete List and the Old Westbury Athletic Director's Honor Roll. In addition to the soccer team, Bayne was a member of the men's cross country and swimming teams as well as an officer and member of numerous campus organizations, including the Honors College and Council of Student Leaders.

About The Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence
The Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence was created 14 years ago to recognize students who have best demonstrated, and been recognized for, the integration of academic excellence with accomplishments in the areas of leadership, athletics, community service, creative and performing arts or career achievement.  Each year, Campus Presidents establish a selection committee, which reviews exemplary members of their college communities who are graduating. Nominees are then forwarded to the Chancellor's Office and are subject to a second round of review. Finalists are then recommended to the Chancellor to become recipients of the Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence. Each recipient received a framed certificate and medallion, which is traditionally worn at commencement.

About The Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete Award
The Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete Award recognizes a combination of academic excellence and outstanding athletic achievement at the NCAA Division I, Division III, and NJCAA levels.  Scholar athletes are selected by System Administration in consultation with the campus Athletic Directors at each level of play. In honor of the accomplishment, each award recipient receives a congratulatory letter and a plaque from Chancellor Zimpher.
