be BOLD, be HOLY, be CATHOLIC
February 5, 2017
Fr. Andrew installation
I pray you had a blessed week.

It was a great week in the life of our Archdiocese. Last Wednesday, the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament was filled with bishops, priests and laity celebrating the joyous occasion of the ordination of two bishops. The Ordination took place on the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul, Jan. 25 th and Archbishop Vigneron challenged Bishops Battersby and Fisher to continue St. Paul's legacy of personal conversion. He also said that they are called to serve in a different setting than Paul: in this time of the New Evangelization in Detroit. Having the privilege of being there and listening to the homily - I thought about us here at St. Clare. We too are called to personal conversion (be holy) and we too are called (to witness) to lead each other in this great effort to re-evangelize and reignite the spark of the Gospel. We help people understand that the good news is the best news (unleash the Gospel). This is what we strive for here at St. Clare: to encounter Jesus, grow in faith, and share it with others.

Catholic Schools week
National Catholic Schools Week, the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States, ends this weekend. Our School celebrated with fanfare and many activities. Please visit the school website at  www.stclareschool.net for stories, pictures, or to just simply browse to see what is new in "Falconland." The theme for National Catholic Schools Week 2017 was "Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service." Here at St. Clare we had parish and school Masses; we went to the Cathedral; hosted an open house; and thanks to the members of the Knights of Columbus, we enjoyed a great breakfast and we honored our teachers with a special lunch. All this to celebrate and give thanks for 90 years of the presence of our school in Grosse Pointe and Detroit.

Winter Carnival
We begin the second month of winter Carnival that will end on the night before Ash Wednesday. We call that day Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday, Feb. 28 th . Our Parish, with PIC and Hospitality Committees organizing, will host special events and would love to invite you to take part in the festivities. First, The Super Bowl party at Bogartz is on Sunday Feb. 5 th . The party begins at 5:30 p.m. and lasts until the game is over! Also, the Hospitality Committee invites you to a special Mass on Feb. 12 at 5 p.m. followed by a Sunday evening social with good food, drinks, and trivia questions. Mark your calendars and plan to attend.

This Week's Focus
St. Clare Community Crawl Event

Please support St. Clare School by ordering a carry out from Hungry Howies located on Jefferson in Grosse Pointe Park,  on Tuesday February 7th.  When  picking up your food or having it delivered, let them know that you are supporting "St. Clare" and they will donate a portion of the proceeds back to our school. Please see the school website for more information.  Thank you for your continued support.
Bonanza

I am very grateful to each of you for your financial support of our parish. Thanks to you we are able to provide many opportunities for our parish to be beautiful, blessed, healthy, and growing. As we begin the Bonanza fundraiser in 2017 I would like to ask all of you to: buy a ticket, take a ticket, and sell a ticket. There are only 1500 tickets printed and Janet with Bob Conway and Tim Kramer are counting on each of us to support this fundraiser.

While I know there is a really big game today, let's remember what really makes this and every Sunday special:  a chance to come together as a family to celebrate the Eucharist and praise the Lord.  Amen!

It's not too late!  Plan to attend the St. Clare PIC Super Bowl Party at Bogart'z Restaurant on February 5, 2017.  $20 advance sale tickets are on sale this weekend after all Masses (Except 5:00 PM).  Football buffet included/cash bar.  It is a fun, low key way to watch the game and commercials with friends.  Plan to buy your tickets in advance after Mass or from the Parish Offices.  I hope to see you there!

A look ahead in the Christian Service calendar has the St. Leo's Lenten Lunch Project boards going up in mid-February.  Dust off your aprons and oven mitts and plan to sign-up to buy or cook for this six-week project to supply food and servers for St. Leo's Soup Kitchen.  Since Lent is so late this year our first food drop is on Sunday March 5.

Simple Suppers are a regular event during Lent at St. Clare.  Our first one is on Ash Wednesday, March 1, and then the next five Mondays during Lent.  We encourage Religious Education families to make it a part of their Monday routine.

Thank you to everyone who helped make our Catholic Schools Week a success. This is one of my favorite weeks of the year. Besides highlighting Catholic Schools, it gives our students a chance to step out of the ordinary and to continue to grow.

With our growth in academics several students were inducted into the National Junior Honor Society last Tuesday night. There are strict academic requirements to be in this group. Congratulations to our newest members: Frank Blackman, Taveon Colson, Jaden Graham, Carys Rees-Baker, Jamison Townsend and Arym Ward. In addition to the induction the current NJHS members were taken to a special Catholic Schools Week Mass celebrated by Bishop Cepeda at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament. For many students, it was their first time at the cathedral and seeing a bishop celebrate the Mass.

Thank you to Jeanne Adams and all the parent volunteers who put on a fantastic lunch for the teachers, for teacher appreciation day.

As Father Andrew mentioned in his homily last weekend, the auction is fast approaching. There is an auction planning meeting this Tuesday at 7:00 over in the Sweeny Center. If you are interested in donating, volunteering or helping in any other way please contact either Sonya Zakolski, 773-354-1573 or the school office, 313-647-5100. Mark your calendars; the auction is April 29, 2017!

I hope to see some of you at the Super Bowl party.
