How to Answer the Hardest Question Your Child Will Ask

The Episcopal Church has produced a free Parents' Guide to Talking to Children about God

Includes the following:

-The childproof answer to the question, "Why can't I see God?"

-Why a passive approach works best.

-Why stories are so powerful.

-One thing you must do with your child every day.

From the Bishop:
Dear People of the Diocese of New Jersey:

"Just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me...."  Matthew 25:40

Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself?

That question, asked of us each time we renew our baptismal promises - and to which we presumably answer affirmatively, I will with God's help, should be at the forefront of our hearts and minds as we see and hear about the desperate plight of the Syrian Refugees.

There has not been a refugee crisis of this size since World War II.   According to one source, nearly 12 million Syrians have been forced from their homes - half of them are children. The United States has pledge to take in a mere 10,000. This is helpful, but just a small proportion of the response that is truly needed. Many people wonder what they can do. In this edition of Good News in the Garden State¬ł we offer you concrete ways to respond to this overwhelming humanitarian crisis.
  • "We cannot ignore the massive human suffering in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, nor in Asia and the Americas. We are our brothers' and sisters' keepers, and our lives are bound up with theirs." -Presiding Bishop Katherine Jefferts Shori, in a statement earlier this weekCompassion, respect for human dignity and the Gospel call for response. Episcopal Migration Ministries offers suggestions about how to do this: Learn. Act. Advocate. Spread Awareness.
  • UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, has established a page which clearly explains the unfolding events and complex history of this crisis.
  • Episcopal Relief & Development is engaging the Syrian crisis through support to agencies in Syria, to the Diocese of Jerusalem's Holy Land Institute for the Deaf and in support of large numbers of people traveling out of crisis areas into Europe.  The agency is in contact with Anglican Communion partners through The Episcopal Church's Convocation of Episcopal Churches in Europe and The Church of England's Diocese in Europe, as well as interfaith partners such as Islamic Relief. Click here to learn more
  • CARE is on the ground helping refugees in Jordan and Lebanon. They are also working inside Syria, providing emergency supplies for families, psychosocial support for children and emergency medical equipment and support for women. Click here to learn more.
  • UK-Based Save the Children has redoubled their efforts to protect child refugees: "Today, over 5 million children are in need of assistance, including over 1 million Syrian children who have sought refuge in neighboring countries. These children are at risk of becoming a lost generation and cannot be ignored. We must save Syria's children." Click here to learn more.
Please keep the Syrian refugees in your prayers and ask what you as individuals and as faith communities can do to help.

Blessings and peace,

The Right Reverend William H. (Chip) Stokes, D.D.
XII Bishop of New Jersey
