Exciting Times at AMCS
In this issue of Good Vibrations, you will see that there is a lot going on here at Airport Marina Counseling Service.

We are just a few days away from our signature fundraiser, the "Spring into Well-Being" Celebration. I hope you will all join us as we honor two amazing supporters of AMCS and work together to raise the funds necessary for us to continue offering low-cost mental health services and train the next generation of therapists.

This year's Celebration has a fun new element - a wine drawing! AMCS is selling 50 tickets for $100 each for a chance to win 24 bottles of great wines! The value is more than $1,200! Tickets are on sale now and can only be purchased by emailing me at or calling (310) 670-1410. Please get your tickets while supplies last!

You will also read below all about one of our amazing therapist interns, Brittany Dean. Like Brittany, many of our therapists have incredible stories about how they came to AMCS and how AMCS is helping them develop professionally, and it is a pleasure to share with you their stories.

Finally, you will learn more about our Step-by-Step program, a unique training program that helps AMCS earn its stellar reputation in the mental health training community.

Wishing you nothing but good vibrations,

Eden Garcia-Balis, LMFT
Executive Director

2018 Champion of Mental Health
Fritz Coleman

Airport Marina Counseling Service's (AMCS) 14th annual "Spring into Well-Being" Celebration will be held on Thursday, April 19, 2018, from 6-9 p.m. at the Los Angeles Airport Marriott Ballroom. Join us as we celebrate the success of our Champion of Mental Health, NBC4 Weathercaster, Fritz Coleman and Community Builder Stephanie Davis, Publisher, HomeTown News. These individuals have been instrumental in helping AMCS become an indispensable part of the county's mental health care safety net.

Fritz is NBC4 Southern California's beloved weathercaster for the NBC4 News at 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. He joined NBC4 in 1982 as the weekend weathercaster and two years later moved to weekdays, where he has been part of the longest-running evening news team with legendary journalists Chuck Henry, Colleen Williams and Fred Roggin. A Southern California broadcasting icon, he is renowned in the region for his extensive knowledge of weather, his sense of humor and affable personality.

In addition to his celebrated broadcast career, Fritz is well-known for giving his time to numerous charitable activities, and hosts hundreds of local events to raise awareness for services that benefit underserved communities. We are proud to be honoring him for his longtime support of AMCS.

We hope you will join us at the Spring Celebration! To purchase tickets or to sponsor the event, please click

Celebrating Brittany Dean
Therapist Profile

Brittany Dean started at AMCS as a trainee in 2014 and has since continued her training as a veteran intern. Not only is her bright, welcoming smile a refreshing greeting any time she is at the clinic, but she serves as an important support and resource to her peers.

Ms. Dean worked diligently to develop her therapeutic skills, particularly establishing a strong therapeutic frame for working with clients struggling with challenging diagnoses, such as Borderline Personality Disorder. During her tenure at AMCS she has participated in honing her skills in the Initial Consultation Track, working at the Boys and Girls Club of Venice where she worked with children and teens and seeing couples at the clinic.

Not only has Ms. Dean been an enthusiastic AMCS team member for the past 3 years, but while training she has also been working as the
Humanities Specialist in California and Hawaii at Pearson, a learning company that supports teachers across 70 countries! Just like so many of our impressive trainees and associates (formerly known as interns), Ms. Dean continues to be an inspiration to the work we do. She will be going into Private Practice in Gardena after she is done at AMCS.

Step-by-Step Training
Helping Support A New Generation
of High-Quality Therapists

The mission of Airport Marina Counseling Service (AMCS) is two-fold: to provide affordable, community-based mental health services and to train mental health therapists. While we often talk about the services provided to clients and the benefits, we are equally committed to the second half of our mission, offering quality training to pre-licensed therapists.
The 12-week Step-by-Step training course offered at AMCS is the first introduction our therapists get to our rigorous training program. For 12 weeks, every training therapist new to AMCS participates in this unique and interactive training program designed to help therapists develop therapeutic skills. Combining didactics, role-playing, engaging discussions, reading materials, observation of recorded sessions and direct feedback makes this training program a rich and rewarding experience geared to meet the needs of training therapists at varying levels of experience.
The value of this course is consistently provided in the feedback offered by those who have participated in this class. We are excited to offer this training program at AMCS as this sets us apart from other training sites and helps develop quality therapists who will continue to help those in the community for years to come.
