30th April 2014
ON A POSITIVE NOTE

We heard this week that the economy is still on the up with growth of 0.8% in the first quarter of 2014. It was widely tipped that it might hit 0.9% or even 1% but that proved unfounded. However the news from The Office for National Statistics (ONS) does mean the economy is now just 0.6% smaller than its 2008 peak.
So...some good news in the financial press, sadly that's not often the case. Even this week, we heard that the UK's largest retail investment manager, Invesco Perpetual, had been fined 18.6m by the city watchdog for exposing investors to unnecessary risk.

There is good news out there though, it's just it doesn't make 'good' headlines for the press, as the blog below shows.

A BAD PRESS FOR MONEY
...but there are winners out there!

Too often, money gets a bad press. Just in the past few weeks, headlines have reported that 'Yes, the stock market is rigged'[1] and 'City watchdog to probe 30m financial products'[2]. ALL CHANGE ON THE ISA FRONT
Are you maximising your ISA allowance?

It's too late to take advantage of your 2013/2014 ISA allowance however this tax year sees some momentous changes to the ISA landscape that make ISAs even more enticing. The ISA allowance is currently 11,880 but from 1 July 2014 ISAs will be reformed into a simpler product called the 'New ISA' (NISA) and the amount you can save will increase to 15,000 for the 2014-15 tax year.
But is there a 'best time' to invest? ISA 'season' is considered to be January through to May, but what should you be doing?

Warren Buffett is well known for his wise words on all things financial. The business magnate, investor and philanthropist is widely considered the most successful investor of the 20th century.
On Saturday he will step out at the Berkshire Hathaway annual shareholders meeting and will receive a very warm welcome. There will be no snoring in his session, as his plain speaking style always gets the room buzzing. This month I have a snippet from one of his shareholder letters which conjures up an interesting image - Click here to read it.

AUTO ENROLMENT IS COMING TO GET YOU
...but even the big guys are getting it wrong!

Back in July 2012 the long awaited Workplace Pension Reforms came into effect. This new legislation marked the start of the new duties for employers which required them to automatically enrol every single one of their eligible jobholders into a work place pension scheme. The introduction of automatic enrolment was phased with the biggest organisations required to comply first. Small business owners have yet to reach their 'staging date' for their enrolment with many having until 2017 to get things in place. It may seem a long way off, but all business owners need to be planning for the impact it will have. As the following blog shows - even the big guys are getting it wrong. Read here
