New Goodwill Store Opening August 26th in Charlottesville

 

Goodwill customer s and donors can look forward to the opening of a new Goodwill store in Charlottesville:

August 26th
8:45am Tie Cutting Ceremony
9am Doors Open

The store is located at the intersection of Avon Street Extended and Mill Creek Drive, in the Food Lion shopping center (34 Mill Creek Drive, Charlottesville, 22902). The Grand Opening last through August 30th. There will be giveaways and a drawing for a flat screen television.


"When we look at the location for a new store, we take a variety of things into consideration," states Mindy Boyd, Vice President of Donated Goods. "Ease of accessibility for customers and donors, the size of the store, traffic counts in the area, as well as how the new store will increase the organization's ability to serve those with employment barriers are all things we consider."

 

The new store will be a 10,400 square foot, brick building, and will feature a convenient, Drive-thru Donation Center, ample parking spaces, and the same high quality, low-cost items for the family and home that customers have shopped for at Goodwill for years. A tie-cutting ceremony with local and Goodwill officials will take place at 8:45am on Wednesday, September 10th. 
 

Goodwill stores provide critical funding to help support job training and employment programs in our communities. Goodwill helps youth, adults, and seniors with disabilities or disadvantages achieve a better life through work and independence. In 2014, Goodwill Industries of the Valleys helped thousands of people and placed over 3,600 individuals into competitive community employment within the 31 county, 13 city service area in Virginia.

Goodwill Receives Grant to Operate Additional Programs in Lynchburg

Goodwill Industries of the Valleys has been awarded, by the Region 2000 Workforce Development Board, a contract to provide services to youth, adults, and dislocated workers through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) programs. Goodwill currently operates these programs for individuals in other areas of the Commonwealth including Charlottesville, as well as the Shenandoah and New River Valleys. Also, Goodwill will act as the Center operator for Workforce Centers in the region.


The contract covers job seeker and employer services available to individuals and businesses in the city of Lynchburg, as well as the counties of Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, and Campbell. Basic services such as assistance with resume writing, computer access, and job search services are open to anyone living in these areas. Case managed services will be available to youth and adults with economic disadvantages as well as those individuals who have lost their job due to company closing or layoff. Additionally, services to businesses will be available to connect them with qualified job seekers, including space for interviewing, candidate screening, and onsite job fairs.

Salem Red Sox to Attend Goodwill Annual Participant Picnic August 14th
(Roanoke)

On August 14th, the Salem Red Sox Mascot will be attending Goodwill's Annual Participant Picnic at the Melrose Jobs Campus, 2502 Melrose Avenue NW, Roanoke.  Along with Mugsy,  Red Sox staff and possibly members of the  team will be bringing the equipment needed for individuals in Goodwill programs to play a game of whiffle ball. The Red Sox are also providing giveaways for the  event.

"The picnic is a way to show our appreciation to the individuals in our programs," states Laura Dickerson, Day Support 
Coordinator. "It is so rewarding to see the joy that such a small gesture can bring to the individuals with disabilities that we serve."

Goodwill's Youth Mentoring Program's End of Summer Celebration on August 15th
(Roanoke)

Goodwill's GoodGuides® Youth Mentoring Program is holding an End of Summer Celebration. The celebration will bring together mentees, mentors, and family members to enjoy hot dogs, chips, and drinks at the GoodGuides Garden. There will also be games such as kickball and volleyball.

GoodGuides is dedicated to helping area youth build career plans, skills and prepare for school
completion, post-secondary training, and productive work. The program provides structured and supportive relationships with trusted adult mentors. GoodGuides serves youth ages 12-21 who are at risk of delinquency or who have already had contact with the juvenile justice system.

Good Choice Companions Offers Blood Pressure Checks in Goodwill Stores
(Roanoke and Salem)

Good Choice Companions, a division of Goodwill Industries of the Valleys, is committed  to providing quality companion care service to individuals in Roanoke and Salem who need assistance  to remain independent.  

Starting this summer, Good Choice Companions will be coming to four area stores once a month to provide blood pressure checks for Goodwill  customers .

"We decided to provide blood pressure checks to people in our stores as an opportunity to connect with our patrons and as an outreach effort to help get information to the community about the services we provide," states Angela Stanfill, Director of Good Choice Companions.
