Fasting is a powerful and transformational spiritual discipline. The Lenten Zip Code Project seeks to eradicate extreme asset-based poverty in the 75215 zip code in South Dallas and 75426 in Red River County. We are committed to transforming the community in each zip code-helping our neighbors who live there leverage their assets to create a productive and sustainable future for themselves and for their children.
By fasting during one meal per week, then donating your meal money, you can join with United Methodists throughout our conference during the Lenten season in making this a reality.

Matthew's gospel is written to a group of people under harsh persecution. Because of their belief in Christ they were outcast and dispossessed. Matthew's gospel was written sometime after the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem in 70 A.D. The gospel was written to be an encouragement in the midst of their troubles and to remind them that despite their circumstances that Jesus Christ is the son of God.
So what do you do if you are living in tough times? Jesus, in Matthew's gospel, says you should live more ethically that you have ever lived before. This is why Jesus invites us to turn the other cheek and love our enemies. Difficult times are not simply to be survived but instead are opportunities to transform the world around us. One of the most striking examples of this is the parable of the talents in Matthew 25:14-30.
A modern day example of Matthew's gospel message is found in the story of two Korean farmers:
Two wealthy Christians, a lawyer and a merchant, joined a party that was traveling around the world. In Korea one day, they saw, in a field by the side of the road, a boy pulling a rude plow, while an old man held the plow handles and directed it. The lawyer was amused, and took a snapshot of the scene.
"That's a curious picture! I suppose they are very poor," he said to the missionary, who was an interpreter and guide to the party.
"Yes," was the reply. "That is the family of Chi Noui. When the church was being built they were eager to give something to it, but they had no money; so they sold their only ox and gave their money to the church. This spring they are pulling the plow themselves."
The lawyer and the businessman by his side were silent for some moments. Then the businessman said, "That must have been a real sacrifice."
"They did not call it that," said the missionary. "They thought it was fortunate that they had an ox to sell."
Regardless of your circumstances today; are you transforming the world through the good news of Jesus Christ or are you merely trying to survive?
With you on Grace Avenue,
Billy Echols-Richter
Pastor
