This is always an interesting time in the life of a parish. We try to hold fast to the observance of Advent while making final decisions about Christmas and Epiphany services. We try to hold fast to the mission of our parishes while working out the gory details of budgets and statistics. Yet, this is the best part of parochial life; holding fast to it all in the moment, so that it may be offered to God's tender care eternally.
We don't have to hold it all together for ourselves, or alone. We hold it up to the light of Christ, that Star in the East, and then we reverently lay it down; not waiting for the right time during Advent; or on that holy night; but every moment of our lives.
Remember the poem that considers what gift we bring to the lover of the world.
Remember to bring your heart.

This final Sunday in Advent reminds us of the visit of the angel Gabriel's visit to Mary as she is drawing water from the well in Nazareth.
We will have laying on of hands at all services. There will be child care available from 10:15 to 12:15.
At 5:00 pm, Celtic Meditations: The Longest Night will take place. Following this service at 6:00 pm, we will go caroling around the neighborhood, sharing the warmth of God.
Hope to see you this Sunday!

Here's an update on the Together Now campaign projects scheduled in the Spring:
- Replace the Chapel sidewalk (as was done on the Parish House side last year)
- Parish House clapboard & trim repair/replacement/paint
Our neighbor Bob Levesque, owner of American Steeple, has been overseeing the project. The faade has been stripped, old storms removed, new primed clapboard & flashing installed, and window frames scraped and prepared for the new storms. Restoration of the original entryway is just about completed.
We will do the finish painting ourselves in the Spring. Get your paint brushes ready!
- New high-R storms for the front windows in the Parish House
Custom-made storms for the dozen faade windows ran about $250 each, installed, and should be in any day.
There are another 14 on the sides that we'll want to replace when we find funds to repaint the Parish House brickwork & window frames. We hope this project will be funded and underway this Spring.
The property goal for the Capital Campaign was to "seal the envelope" from water & weather damage. We'll be there by the end of this year!
Other Grounds & Buildings News:
The City of Salem performed a building inspection this week and found no violations that would prevent issuing our certificate. Good news!
We didn't manage a garden day to put The Quinlan Memorial Garden to bed for the winter. After all the work last year, however, our spring garden day shouldn't be any more difficult. Sadly, another faithful member of the Quinlan family was interred in the garden during 2014, after the untimely death of David Quinlan. A memorial brickway at the foot of the Celtic Cross is in the final planning stages for those who are, and those who wish to be, memorialized in this beautiful garden.
Michael Ouellette, a journeyman plumber who with his wife Melissa and kids Coleman & Quinn attend The Young & The Restless Chapel, volunteered to do some heating system repairs this week. Thanks, Mike! Your willingness to take on these old steam radiators is a huge blessing.
Tom Tucker constantly monitors the state of our buildings. He took care of troubleshooting a cellarway retaining wall that has shifted, and met with an arborist to see if a huge tree on the parish house property line was responsible. He says all is OK at this point, though the tree should be pruned to preserve the adjacent roof. He also came up with a solution to stabilize the entryway floor inside the apartment entry that dropped as a basement beam settled and aged. This should be handled over the winter.
Faithfully submitted,
Eric Wagner
