Rector's Musing

Last week, I began considering our two weekly services and how they are related. The 10:30 am service is quite different from our worship at 5:00 pm. I am not the only one who attends both services each week, which made me wonder why one might do this.

For me, Sunday morning church has always been a communal experience. I feel like I belong to other people, other people who love and follow God too. This time energizes me, nourishes me and sends me bravely out to bring the Good News. All the prayers, music and especially communion is equipping me to go out and serve the Lord in the world.

We hear in the Gospels that Jesus often went off to a quiet place to pray before he embarked on his mission. In these times and places, Jesus considers how he uniquely belongs to God and takes time to discern what God would have him do. This is how I experience the 5:00 pm time. I leave the service in the morning raring to go. Sunday evening gives me the space and time I need for this quiet time of prayer and discernment before I set out to serve God in Christ through God's people. It is a time for me to be very quiet and listen to the voice of God, to settle into God's presence.

I am so very grateful to all of you who make these two experiences possible for me and everyone who attends. There really is not simply one way to approach the divine and it is wonderful to be among people who respect each others' paths to the heart of God.
This Sunday

This Sunday is Palm Sunday. Following the Blessing of the Palms and procession, we hear the Passion according to St. Mark read by members of the parish. If you wish to read a part in the narrative there is still one role left. Simply call or email the office and let us know.
The anthem is an old Scottish poem called, "How Much I Owe" set to the tune "Petra" and arranged by John Hudson. Following the service, Coffee Hour is hosted by Deb Papps.

Celtic Meditations at 5:00 pm also moves from the triumphant entrance of Palm Sunday to the Passion. The reflection will be given by the Rector and the opening is a poem by Mary Oliver. Two new tunes introduced this week are "O'Carolan's Lament" and "Farewell to Glasgow."

We are looking forward to seeing you this Sunday as we gather together to  encounter unconditional grace.

Celtic Service every Sunday at 5:00 pm

We are now entering a time when we consider cosmic events in our relationship with God. We also walk with Jesus through this time to remember that his suffering had a purpose, and that purpose serves us in never letting us go, even unto our own death. The new creation is in the making, and we celebrate our new life in this while we consider its beginning.

Come and experience the quiet of this service and consider just how much you are loved by God.

Easter Memorials
Envelopes are available for your Easter memorials and thanksgiving. This is one special way to acknowledge your gratitude for the significant people and events in your life. These gifts benefit many of our programs which serve our community. Please contact the office or return the envelope to the office. For inclusion in the Easter leaflets, names must be received by Sunday, March 29th.
Easter Baskets and Brunch
Don't forget to bring your Easter Baskets to church Easter morning for a special blessing (and treat)!

Following the morning service, we will host a potluck Easter Brunch. Baked ham is the main course courtesy of Tom and Priscilla Lemons. Come and share a bite to eat as we celebrate this holiest of days!
Holy Week Service

Nathaniel Bowditch School Partnership
NBS has asked for volunteers from 9:30 - 10:30 (or any part of that hour) to come and let a student practice reading to you. If you can go to the NBS any day for this, please let Laurel know.

The members of the Leadership Team for NBS/GCIS are David Ashton, Kourtni Brown, Laurel Deery, Ingrid Fox, Paige Nalipinski, Ryan Patten and Eric Wagner.
