Ralph Vaughan Williams composed the tune for Sunday's opening hymn (At the Name of Jesus) specifically for that text. The title of the tune, King's Weston, refers to a manor house on the Avon River near Bristol, England. Vaughan Williams' music has often been described as "characteristically English." Peter Ackroyd writes, "If that Englishness in music can be encapsulated in words at all, those words would probably be: ostensibly familiar and commonplace, yet deep and mystical as well as lyrical, melodic, melancholic, and nostalgic yet timeless." Vaughan Williams was fond of folk music, and in honor of this, the opening voluntary on Sunday will be an improvisation on a folk tune, but this one from Ukraine.

Thank you to everyone who has participated in the Special Ask! We are now over 50% funded for our current deficit, but have not yet reached our goal. We are asking that each household make a special one time donation of $600 to Grace Church to eliminate our deficit for 2014 and so that we may hire a part time administrator for the office, as Debbie can not continue with the added responsibilities forever. Please direct your payments to "Grace Church" noting "Special Ask" in the memo line. Thank you.

This week's Gospel reading is Matthew 16:21-28, in which Jesus predicts his death.
Just as the last shall be first in the kingdom, here again Jesus turns things upside down, confounding the wishes and preconceptions of his closest friends. Clear-headed, unclouded by emotion, Jesus pulls Peter up for allowing his personal preferences to interfere with the purposes of God. Of course, that is hard; it is the cross that Peter, and the others, and we, will have to shoulder and walk with until the kingdom comes.

Thank you to all who took leaves from the school tree on Sunday. If you did not have a chance to take one, there are still a few left. The teachers are very grateful to receive these supplies. More opportunities to be involved in this exciting partnership will be forthcoming over the next weeks and months.

Sunday Evening Musicians Needed
During Debbie's sabbatical, one of her projects is to design a Celtic meditative service that will be offered on Sunday evenings beginning this fall. More information on the service itself will be announced soon, but we will be in need of instrumentalists (any instrument is welcome) to lead the musical worship aspect of the service. If you or someone you know might be interested or would like more information, please contact Ryan Patten ([email protected]).

Parish Choir Starts Again!
The Parish Choir at Grace Church will be singing
for the first time this season at Rev. Debbie's first service back with us after her sabbatical (September 14th). To prepare for this service, rehearsals will begin on September 3rd at 7:30. New members are always welcome, so if you love to sing, and enjoy praising God in fellowship with like-minded friends, and generally like having fun, please join us! For more information, please contact Ryan Patten, visit the church's website, or grab a Parish Choir information leaflet in the back of the church.

Choir School Starting September 3rd!
For centuries, the church has provided quality education to young people in music and the arts. Here at Grace Church, all young people in grades 2 through 8 are invited to audition for the Choir School, an opportunity to gain a quality musical education.
In addition to learning about various aspects of
the church and its liturgy, students will learn how to read music, sing with proper vocal technique, and have many opportunities for performance! We rehearse on Wednesdays from 4-5:15pm, and our first meeting of this season is September 3rd! For more information, please contact Ryan Patten, visit www.gracechurchsalem.org/music, or pick up a Choir School brochure from the back of the church.
