On the Sunday after Pentecost, the Church observes the Holy Trinity. Rather than celebrating either an event or the preparation for an event, this holy day celebrates a theological understanding of the nature of God. On Sunday at both services, we will sing hymns that celebrate the Oneness of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The anthem is Carson Cooman's "Be present, Holy Spirit." At 10:30 am, all children are invited to gather on the patio to work on the Abundant Life Garden, growing vegetables for a meal program at St. Peter's Church in Beverly. Coffee Hour after the service is hosted by Ryan Patten and Kourtni Brown. The Holy Trinity holds great significance in Celtic Spirituality. God is in all of creation, God in our brother Christ leads us to the sacred heart and the breath of God, the Holy Spirit protects and inspires all our lives. The Holy Trinity was often invoked during daily tasks for protection and focus. At Celtic Meditations, at 5:00 pm, we will prayerfully move into a more intimate understanding of the Trinity through prayers and music from the Celtic tradition. The reflection will be offered by the Rector. Healing is offered each week at this service. We truly want you to be with us no matter where you are on your search for meaning. |

Fundraising Planning Breakfast
Come join us on this Saturday, May 30th from 9:30 to 11:00 am as we plan a few events for the remainder of the year. Help us design fun events for Haunted Happenings, or ways to join in the Christmas in Salem Walk. Bring your ideas for ways we can raise some money from the neighborhood for our programs that help others in Salem. A light breakfast will be provided. So come and share your creativity with us on Saturday May 30th. Everyone is welcome to come!

New Frontal for Pentecost
|
The children of Grace Church, under the direction of Melissa Barnes, wanted to make this frontal to represent our hands at work serving the world. Each cutout is the shape of the hand of some of these children (including the Rector). They also chose this symbol as it looks like the tongues of flame at Pentecost. During the service on Sunday, they came up and laid these holy hands on the frontal and with Debbie, blessed this ornament of our parish. We all offer thanks to these servants of God.

"Epistle" to the church in Salem
|
In the Fall, we had various members of Grace come forward and share their experience of stewardship as an "epistle" to the parish. We all enjoyed these so much that we have continued to occasionally have others come up and do the same. This week, Deb Papps spoke:
The Episcopal Church says, "Stewardship is about being grateful, responsible stewards of the gifts we receive from God. The Episcopal Church sees stewardship as more than simply contributing money to the church; it's also about contributing time and talents, and volunteering for ministry and mission. It's about reaching out to build relationships from a perspective of abundance instead of scarcity." I like to think of stewardship as caring for God's home, because of his unconditional love for us. Just as we care for our own homes, we think of God's home as needing our love and concern. We neaten and clean and decorate. Maybe it's the Tuckers running the vacuum or using the snowblower. Perhaps it is Pauline Grady, setting up the altar for services. Or, perhaps it is the Flower Committee making arrangements for the altars for those of you who might give special funds for a special occasion in your lives. Think how the decorations enhance our experiences in this space. The people who came before us created a building, God's home. When they built this place in 1927, they installed stained glass windows which had been in the original small mission church on this site. But, they designed an overall plan and theme for windows which would come over the years as funds became available through gifts. The very last window was put in place in May 1993 with a gift which Jon and I were fortunate to be able to make at that time. It was meaningful to us as a continuing legacy to this church community - for those here before us, those of us who are presently here and for those who will come after we are gone. The images in this window of Fidelitas, meaning loyalty in Latin and which celebrate the ministry of women, speak to the faithfulness of each of us. Queen Esther was willing to risk death, as she stood up for all Jews, by approaching King Ahasuerus in his inner court. Ruth, the Moabite, refused to leave Naomi, her mother-in-law, when she returned from Moab to Bethlehem in the land of Judah. Mary Magdalene went to the tomb, found it empty and wept; but she stayed faithful to her Lord even as she did not recognize him, thinking him to be the gardener. And the sisters, Martha and Mary: Martha was distracted by her many tasks and Mary sat faithfully at Jesus' feet, listened to him and anointed his feet with ointment. What we each bring to Grace Church, with our time and talent of volunteering and mission and with our monies, both small and large, are the most important gifts we can give to God in thanks for his forever love. Let us be faithful and loyal stewards!

The Afterschool Program: Music Academy at Grace (MAG)
This two hour program offers a snack, an hour of music instruction and 45 minutes of activities each week free to all students at the Bowditch and any other students in grades 2 - 5 that are interested. Our staff gives the music instruction and four teams of parishioners staff the activities each week. The activities include drama, cooking, crafts and games.
From August 17th through the 28th, we will be offering a morning music camp where the students prepare and record a Christmas CD to be used for fundraising purposes. Each day ends with lunch provided by the parish.

Memorial Day weekend is the start of summer travel. Over the next three to four months, many of us will be traveling and out of town. Here are a few suggestions for staying connected to your church.
- Find an Episcopal Church in the town you are visiting and go attend. Make sure you bring back a leaflet so we can see the wonderful things other parishes are doing!
- Keep us in your prayers.
- Keep you pledge payments current, or better yet, prepay them in June for the summer months.
- If you return on Sunday afternoon, don't forget you can come to church every Sunday at 5:00 pm. Celtic Meditations is a great way to prepare as you transition from vacation mode to work mode.
Don't forget, if you are in Salem on Sunday morning, we will have breakfast each week at 9:30 am, (beginning July 5), Holy Communion with the Garden Project for the Church School at 10:30 am, Celtic Meditations at 5:00 pm and a picnic at 6:00 pm (beginning June 28).
So enjoy this wonderful gift from God while you stay connected with the holy.
