Cornell Graduate and Professional Student Orientation Fall 2016
Dear Incoming Students,

We are excited that you will be joining us in beautiful Ithaca, New York this August!

The Graduate School will host Orientation for new Fall 2016 students on Monday, August 22 from 8:30 am to noon in Bailey Hall.

We invite new graduate and professional students to learn more about Cornell graduate requirements and resources, meet President Hunter Rawlings and Dean Barbara Knuth, and be welcomed by our current graduate and professionals students (both in person and through a special video, Graduate Students, Graduate Stories, where you will learn first-hand from our students about their experiences and advice for success).

You will learn about the Graduate and Professional Student Assembly (GPSA), have the opportunity to talk with representatives from over 40 organizations (campus, student, and community-based) at our resource fair, complete your I-9 paperwork so that funded students can receive payment, and pick up your Cornell ID card. Continental breakfast will be available during the morning.

The goal of our Orientation Program is simple. We want to warmly welcome you to campus and help you become a member of our communities of scholars, researchers, and colleagues. You will also learn about graduate study at Cornell along with expectations and tips for success as a new graduate student. We will provide you with valuable information to introduce you to the many resources and services to help you throughout your time at Cornell. Our orientation program does not replace your field orientation program but will supplement it and help you experience the benefits of being in a University-campus community. Please consult your field's website for field, college, and program-specific orientation programs.

What you Need to Bring:  If you are scheduled to receive funding from Cornell or plan to hold a job on campus please come prepared to complete the federal requirements for the I-9 form. You will need to bring  identification (see pdf) . If you are unable to do so at the event, you will need to work with your field or department later in the week. If you have not yet sent a final, official transcript to the Graduate School you may drop one off at the resource fair.

Special Session: In addition to our morning program, we are offering a special optional session, "Developing Your Strategic Plan for Graduate School Success" with Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs Jan Allen, on Monday, August 22 from 1:00 - 2:00 PM. Lunch will be provided for participants at 12:45 . Please check your schedule and, if you can attend, RSVP by Friday, August 19 (as soon as possible).

Other Orientation Opportunities: Additional opportunities to get involved and become a part of the Cornell community include:
  • Monday, August 22 from 3:30-5:30: Ice Cream Social at the Big Red Barn Graduate and Professional Student Center
  • Tuesday, August 23 from 5:30-9:30: Ithaca By Night. Meet up with other incoming students for dinner at one of the many great Ithaca restaurants, guided by a current student.  Bring cash for your portion of the dinner.
