Activities at Florissant Fossil Beds in September
 
fossil beds Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument is open year round. During September, the Monument is open 9:00 am - 5:00 pm. (with extended hours 8:00 am - 6:00 pm during Labor Day Weekend)
 
Daily Interpretive Program Schedule:
 
During the month of September there will be limited interpretive programs offered daily depending upon staffing levels. These programs may include talks, walks, fossil demonstrations, and tours of an 1878 homestead. Please call ahead for more details at 719.748.3253.
 
Weekly Programs:
 
Yoga Hikes, Mondays, 9:00 am - 10:30 pm. Meet at the visitor center.
Fossil Demonstration Excavation Site, Wednesdays, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm. This site is located off the Petrified Forest Loop approximately 1 mile round trip from the visitor center.
 
There are no additional fees for any park programs beyond the daily entrance fee of $7 per adult (15 and younger are free). For additional information, please call 719.748.3253 or visit our website HERE.

Fossil Beds Fee Free Day

National Park Service Saturday, September 22 is Fee Free Day/Public Lands Day, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm at the Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument. Enjoy your public lands on National Public Lands Day free! The Monument has 15 miles of hiking trails, a museum and film, and self-guided trails. Kids can earn a Junior Ranger Badge by completing a Junior Ranger gamebook available at the visitor center desk.

Free Historic Tours Offered

Join the Ute Pass Historical Society & Pikes Peak Museum for free tours tomorrow. The walking tour of historic downtown Woodland Park meets at 9:30 am at the Museum Center, followed by a tour of the five historic cabins in History Park at 11:00 am. History Park is located at 231 E. Henrietta Avenue.

For more information, please call the UPHS at 719.686.7512. The Gift Shop is open 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, Wednesday through Saturday. Tours of the cabins can be made by appointment year round. Groups and schools are welcome!

Every fall, the aspens change colors and the elk bugling create an exciting time of sights and sounds in the mountains! Learn the secrets of nature that happen every year at this time.
 
Saturday, September 1
Concentrating on Constellations 6:45-8:00 pm Meet at the Visitor Center.
Take a journey through the night skies with Naturalist Pat to learn how to find constellations. In this classroom session, you will connect the numbered stars on a practice map to form constellations. Recommended for ages 8 and above. Limited seating is available so come early.
 
Star Party 8:00-10:00 pm Meet at the Visitor Center.
Join the Colorado Springs Astronomical Society for this exciting event. We will use telescopes to view various celestial bodies. Bring blankets, chairs and dress warmly.

US 24 Rockfall Mitigation, Cascade to Manitou Springs (completion approximately October, 2018)

8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. daily, Tuesday, September 4 through Thursday, September 6 and 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Friday, September 7
  • Single lane with US 24 eastbound and westbound traffic head to head sharing the US 24 eastbound lane in Ute Pass between Cascade and Manitou Springs (mile post 294 - 301) during hours of operation
  • Friday, September 7 motorists can expect EB and WB left lane closure
  • Reduced speed limits
  • Extended commute time for congestion in the work zone
  • Road restriction to 11 foot width restriction during working hours
  • Work consists of scaling, ditch cleaning and dirt work for crossover
  • Bicyclists are discouraged from riding through the construction zone during hours of operations
Work is to stabilize large boulders and rocks above from falling onto the highway. For the protection of the traveling public and workers, traffic is moved to the outside lanes to create a safe buffer under where mitigation is taking place. This work is taking place between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Crews are not working during morning and evening commute times, and are off the road on Saturdays and Sundays.
