Fracking. This term has quickly become a common household word. But how many of us really know what it means? Retired geologist, John Rakowski, will talk about what fracking is and its impact on both the environment and society at the Pikes Peak Historical Society's February Chautauqua.

John has worked as an exploration and exploitation geologist in the oil and gas industry for over 40 years. John retired to the Florissant area and is now active with PPHS and the Lake George Gem & Mineral Club.

The Pikes Peak Historical Society invites you to learn more about fracking at their monthly Chautauqua (free program) on Sunday, February 19th, 2:00 pm at the Florissant Library, 334 Circle Drive in Florissant.  This program is presented as a public service, admission is free and refreshments are served.  No reservations needed but arrive early , seating is limited. For more information 719-748-8259 or 719.748.3861.

The Ute Pass Historical Society presents "Ute Pass Childhood in the Early Days."

In the early 1900s, many folks found the Ute Pass area to be a good place to raise a family. Children were expected to be self-sufficient and tend to their chores while busy parents worked the railroad and did other jobs.
Dorothy Hart recalls that her mother could not keep track of her. "She would tie a rope around my waist and tie me to the railing of the store."
Donna Jean Clifford remembers hanging out wash in Colorado winters. "I had cold fingers every morning!"

Despite daily chores, there was always time for parties, picnics, and fun.  This exhibit reveals personal stories and features photographs and vintage artifacts.

The exhibit can be seen at the Woodland Park library on the 3rd floor through March. For more information, contact the Ute Pass Historical Society at 719-686-7512

  by Justine Calderwood, MSPT

No, this isn't a blog post on how to get rid of that irritating person that causes you so much grief in your life.  This is a post about how to relieve that nagging, grating pain in your rump.  You know, that one that aches when you are sitting, working at your computer.  The one that causes a hot, poker sensation in your tush when you're going up stairs.  Or the ache that you get when you try to increase your running mileage.  The one you just can't ignore when you're picking something up off the floor, standing in line at the grocery store, or trying to get comfortable so you can [finally] drift off to sleep.  That's the one.        Continue reading....
