Gratitude.
It is a sentiment that lies beneath everything we do at Polaris Partners, so often conveyed but rarely spoken of as we move through our days, collaborating with phenomenal teams and growing outstanding companies.

As we enter this holiday season, we would like to take the time to express our heartfelt appreciation for the opportunities of the past year and for the people in our lives who made these successes possible. It is a privilege to do the work we do - and we feel incredibly fortunate for the chance to make a positive impact on our companies... and in the world.

Our Portfolio Grows As Our Companies Thrive
At Polaris we pride ourselves in helping to take our companies to the next level, no matter where they are in their life cycle. Whether we are moving a concept out of lab or moving a company into a new market, our ability to contribute to growth at every stage of development allows us to make a real difference in the technology and healthcare sectors.

And there is more to come! The innovation horizon has never been so bright, and we look forward to sharing plenty of investing news in the year ahead.

A Banner Exit Year
Thus far in 2013, four Polaris-backed healthcare companies have held successful initial public offerings (IPOs) and another 11 companies were acquired or achieved liquidity.

The NASDAQ stock exchange welcomed Receptos, Inc., Acceleron Pharmaceuticals, BIND Therapeutics and Fate Therapeutics while companies such as Spindle (sold to Twitter) and National Electronic Attachment (sold to Accel/KKR) will continue to make their mark under new ownership. Other significant transactions for our firm include Tiger Global Management's purchase of shares in Automattic/WordPress, and Centerbridge Partners' investment in Focus Financial leaving us with meaningful ownership stakes in both of these organizations.

We are proud to have shepherded these emerging companies to these important points in their evolution. And we remain extremely excited about our exit pipeline in the coming months. Stay tuned.

Building The Next
Generation Of Innovators
On November 23, Polaris Partners welcomed the first CoderDojo to Boston. Inspired and driven by the Hello World Foundation, of which we are a founding sponsor, CoderDojos have taught thousands of young people in dozens of countries to code for free. We are full of hope and pride when we consider the benefit this effort will bring to the neighborhoods of Boston and Cambridge. Our Entrepreneur Out-of-Residence (EOR) James Whelton, the founder of Hello World Foundation was on hand to lead this very first - of what we believe to be many - sessions in and around our community. We are certain our next generation of serial innovators and entrepreneurs are embedded here and we are thrilled for the chance to give them their start.

An Exciting New Home Awaits
Home is where the heart is... and the Boston Seaport is at the heart of our region's innovation ecosystem. Come the second quarter of 2014, Polaris Partners will call One Marina Park Drive "home" as we settle into our new digs, within minutes of more than 30 of our portfolio companies. This news comes on the heels of moving into our new space at
The Letterman Complex at the Presidio in San Francisco, where we now connect with our West Coast companies. We are grateful for the proximity and opportunity to welcome the entrepreneurial community to our fantastic new offices and look forward to making a meaningful impact in these exciting neighborhoods.

Extraordinary Additions
To The Polaris Family
We operate in a people business and are lucky to work with only the absolute best... again and again. We funded 10 new companies while supporting another 17 that are led by our repeat entrepreneurs this year. Our recruiting efforts helped to place more than two dozen c-level executives and board directors into our companies... and the list continues to grow.

Here at home we added top-notch entrepreneurial talent welcoming Entrepreneurs In and Out of Residences, Pat Kinsel and James Whelton, and Associate Matt Eaton to the Polaris Technology team. We also hired Emily Mendell, former head of communications for the National Venture Capital Association, as VP of Communications for our firm. These individuals join a stellar team already in place, and are poised to help bring our companies to new heights of success.
