Motor City Saturdays start this weekend

Motor City Saturdays were such a huge success that the Greenhills Service Learning Department has increased the number of events for this year -- and the first one, on Oct. 3, is coming up fast.  Sign up to spend a morning with students and families, giving back to our greater community. This weekend's Motor City Saturday is the Greening of Detroit, with future Saturdays dedicated, among other projects, to Blight Busters and Focus: HOPE. Gryphons sports update
It's been a strong fall season for Greenhills athletes, with boys tennis ranked tops in the state, volleyball in second place in its division, and boys soccer ranked second in the state while holding down first place in its division. The tennis team already has won two tournaments outright, including one hosted here.

In soccer, the highlight so far has been a victory in the Hackett Tournament, along with a current overall record of 15-2-3. At one point in the season, the team was outscoring its opponents 67-8.

Field hockey continues to improve, while one member of the girls golf team has the current season low of 97 for 18 holes at Huron Meadows. Volleyball, meanwhile, took first place in their Belleville tournament and has a record of 13-3 overall. The cross country team is larger than ever, and the boys and girls teams finished first and second, respectively, at the recent MIAC Jamboree.
Greenhills students begin year with trips and retreats

Upper school class trips and middle school grade-level retreats helped Greenhills students start the school year on the right foot this year. Check out a Flickr photo album of selected photos from various destinations, where bonding, team-building, and other important skills were reinforced.

Flu shot clinic coming to Greenhills Tuesday
Flu season may be upon us, but have no fear -- Greenhills is here to help. The school's annual flu shot clinic is set for Tuesday, Oct. 6, and runs from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. in the Greenhills dining room. No appointment is necessary, and the entire community is welcome. Better to have a Band-Aid now than a week in bed later!   Be sure to check Greenhouse for important details.
New bus on the move, thanks to donors

Thanks to the generosity of donors at last year's paddleraiser at "A Night for Greenhills," the school's newest bus (foreground) is already busy shuttling students back and forth to their many activities. Donors raised more than $20,000 towards the purchase, which already has gone a long way toward helping transport students more efficiently and economically.

Friedlander Outdoor Forum takes shape

Construction of the Friedlander Outdoor Forum is just about complete, with workers finishing surrounding plantings and tidying up the remaining landscaping. ( Click here to see a Flickr photo album documenting the construction .) The area is designed for multiple uses, including as an outdoor classroom, a performance venue, a study area, or simply a place for quiet reflection.  More ...

VIDEO: Why helping those in distress should be the law

Amos Guiora '75, a professor at the S.J. Quinney College of Law at the University of Utah, recently spoke to an all-school assembly about what he argues should be the legal obligation of bystanders to render aid to those in distress. These video excerpts from his talk explain his thinking.

Surprise trip to Spain? Yes, please!

Like most teachers, my summer plans are a mix of professional workshops, family vacations, and visits from folks who believe that Pinckney is "up North."  Mid-June, this summer, I had just returned from a week of working for the College Board when an email header, "trip to Spain???" caught my eye.  More ...
