In 2016 the Mayor's Rodeo for Recreation raised an unprecedented $50,000 for the City's Recreation programs. We're not holding another event in 2017, but are still accepting donations for the 2017 summer season. The Beach Bonfire is back! Come by the Fifth Avenue beach on Friday, May 5 for a bonfire on the beach, BYO chair, snacks, blankets, friends, and more. Bonfires are every Friday through June at around 8 pm. On Friday, May 12 the bonfire is on the Third Avenue beach. 

Pugapalooza at the Wonder Bar

Pugapalooza returns to Asbury Park for the 5th year, celebrating those beautiful scrunched-up faces with a weekend-long celebration of your four-legged puggy friends. The weekend kicks off on Friday, May 5 with a meet and greet at Dark City Brewery, kids and dogs welcome. The event is 5 pm to 8 pm, and a donation of $5 is suggested. The main event is Saturday, May 6 at the Wonder Bar from 1 pm to 5 pm, with vendors, gift baskets, and more. Cover is $10. The Wonder Bar hosts a Pug Brunch on Sunday, May 11 at 11 am for $15, and the weekend closes with the Pink Your Pug Out Promenade on the Fifth Avenue Pavilion. The New Jersey Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony returns to the Paramount Theater on Sunday, May 7 at 7 pm, honoring the garden state's luminaries and all that they've contributed to our state, country, and planet. The fifteen inductees this year include author Carol Higgins Clark, TV's Kelly Rippa, actor Ray Liotta, pro soccer star Carli Lloyd, musician Wyclef Jean, and activist Peace Pilgrim. the New Jersey AIDs Walk

The New Jersey AIDs Walk comes to Asbury Park on Sunday, May 7, joining groups of thousands of people starting to walk at the same time, the same day, throughout the state. The walk raises funds and awareness for people living with HIV/AIDs. The walk starts at the Center in Asbury Park, registration starts at 11:30 am and the walk starts at 1 pm. It's a pageantapalooza! Paradise presents a two-night celebration of  Gay United States Pageantry  on Wednesday, May 3 and Thursday May 4, with finals on Friday, May 5. The special birds of paradise theme is hosted by Arione DeCardesza. The night includes performances by Jiggly Caliente of RuPaul's Drag Race Season 4, Mr Gay United States Desi M. Andrews, star of Transcendent Miss Gay United States Bionka Simone, Miss Gay United States at Large Felix Correa, Miss Wessland Grand Empress Adriana Fuentes, and Miss Gay United States 2012 Taylor Madison Monroe. Come hang out with Peppa Pig and her friends and family at Peppa Pig's Big Splash, a live show at the Paramount Theater on Friday, May 5 at 5 pm. Tickets start at $35, more info here

Thank you for being a friend! Pull out the cheesecake and swing by Paradise on Sunday, May 7 for the Golden Gurlz, a live stage show with three episodes of beloved classic the Golden Girls. This iteration of the Miami foursome features Brittany Lynn, Bella Cane, Pissi Myles, Connor Michalchuk, and Anne Allen. Doors open at 6 pm and tickets are $15, more info here

the Air Sex Championships at the Saint

Somewhere in between burlesque, air guitar, and professional athleticism, the Air Sex Championships comes to the Saint on Monday May 8, entering its ninth year of national tourning and spreading the joy of making love to invisible partners. Doors open at 7, and the night opens with a stand up comedy show at 8 pm. The (ahem) gesturing begins at 10 pm. Cover is $10, more info here

Pop's Garage celebrates Cinco de Mayo with a Tequila Tasting on Thursday, May 4 at 6 pm. Sample six varieties of tequilas, accompanied by specialty cocktails and passed appetizers. The event is $35, more info here

Haunted Pub Tour with the Paranormal Museum

Enjoy some spirits while you're enjoying some spirits, with the Haunted Pub Tour on Thursday, May 11. Find out all the spooky stories behind the city by the sea, with the Ghosts and Legends Downtown Tour on Saturday, May 6. The 90-minute walking tour is led by the Paranormal Museum, and will cover the haunted history of Asbury Park's historic downtown. The tour is at 7 pm, tickets are $12. More info here

Full Moon Circle at Spirit Cove

Spirit Cove hosts a Full Moon Circle on Wednesday, May 10, to guide you in purging the negative energy and attachments in your life. May's Flower Moon is a time of growth and fertility, and an auspicious time for new beginnings. The circle starts at 7 pm and is $10, more info here

Some of Asbury Park's beachgoers are a little more otherworldly than your average guest! Paranormal Museum leads a Ghosts of the Boardwalk tour on Friday, May 12, exploring Asbury Park's haunted beachside history on a 75 minute walk. The walk starts at 8:30om, tickets are $12, more info here

Words! bookstore hosts a Children's Story Time on Thursdays, from 11:30 am to 12 pm. Children of all ages are welcome for stories, games, songs, and fun, content mostly geared towards kids under 5. More info here

My Sistas hosts a 12-week program for girls from 4 to 18 years old at West Side Community Center, every Wednesday from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm, until May 10, 2017. It's a place for girls to freely express themselves, love and appreciate themselves and each other, value healthy relationships, and increase their self-esteem and confidence. More info here.


The Asbury Park Punk Rock Flea Market returns to Convention Hall on Saturday, May 6 from 10 am to 5 pm. Featuring over 125 vendors selling records, clothes, art, and more, entrance is $10 for early bird access and $5 after 11 am. More info here

Porkchop at Parlor Gallery

Parlor Gallery: "Achromatic," a group exhibition exploring the power and clarity of works created in black and white. Part of the exhibit includes a special solo installation by Asbury Park-based artist and muralist Porkchop. Other artists include Elizabeth Waggett, Derek Gores, Kit King, Dylan Egon, Alexandra Becker Black, and Rebecca Adams. The exhibit runs through May 8, more info here

Exhibit No.9: "Far From the Road," a group exhibition of contemporary, urban, abstract, post-impressionistic, and photographic works that are literal and metaphorical expressions of what it means to be out of town and off the grid. Featuring artists include Kathy Buist, Linda Zacks, Luis Bivar, Melissa Bronwen, Pyle, Ole Marius, Jorgenson, Tom White, and Lois White.  The exhibit runs through May 21, more info here

Mary's Place by the Sea Walkathon

Based in Ocean Grove, Mary's Place by the Sea provides a place of rest and retreat for women who are receiving treatment for cancer. The non-profit provides free support and services to supplment their care, including oncology massages, nutrition education, individual counseling, writing for health, reflexology, Reiki, meditation, yoga, and more. Mary's Place by the Sea is always looking for house volunteers, special event volunteers, service practitioners, office helpers, and more.
