BYO chair, snacks, blankets, friends, and more to the weekly  Beach Bonfire  starting at sunset, around 8 pm. On Wednesday, August 16 the bonfire is on the First Avenue Beach. 

The Rotary Club presents a Mini Golf Fundraiser on Thursday, August 17 at the Asbury Eighteen on the boardwalk, a fundraiser for the Asbury Park Rotary Club's many local causes, including this year's addition of the Asbury Park Fire Department AED Fund. The fun putts from 6 pm to 8 pm, and tickets are $15 per person. More info here

Visual albums aren't just for Beyonce anymore! The Asbury Hotel presents an Out Like Lambs Film Screening and Record Release Party on Friday, August 18. The screening includes 14 short films, one for each song of new album Fingers Crossed, celebrating the Asbury Park-based band's post-punk college rock sound. The filmmakers came from the Asbury Park community, and celebrate the Asbury vibe. Live music performances also by the Yams and Sister Ancestor. Doors open at 7 pm, and cover is $10. More info here


Join the Sunset Lake Commission for a Sunset Lake Cleanup on Saturday, August 19 from 9 am to 11 am, a chance to show some love to Asbury's waters beyond the beach! All supplies (including Booskerdoo coffee!) will be provided, meetup is on the Sunset Avenue side of the lake, near the intersection of Park Avenue. More info here

The City of Asbury Park's Mayor's Wellness Committee presents Yoga in the Park on Monday, August 21 from 5 pm to 6 pm in Springwood Park. Come experience an easy stretching and yoga session with certified instructors from the Community YMCA of Red Bank, open to all ages and all experience levels! The event is free, please bring a towel and drinking water.

What Creates a Total Solar Eclipse? (Ted-Ed)

Turn around, bright eyes! For the first time in 38 years, the whole of the continental US will be able to see a Total Solar Eclipse on Monday, August 21, from approximately 1:22 pm to 4 pm. New Jersey isn't one of the states that gets to experience the totality (when the sun is completely covered by the moon, creating night-like darkness), but we will be able to see the moon cover about 75% of the sun's light. DO NOT LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE ECLIPSE. Looking at the sun without proper protect can cause serious eye damage, and that goes for looking at it through a camera or set of binoculars. Solar Eclipse Viewing Party at the Asbury Park Public Library

The Asbury Park Public Library hosts a Solar Eclipse Viewing Party on Monday, August 21 at 1 pm. The family-friendly program includes a story and craft hour, and eclipse glasses for the first 100 to fill out a permission slip. More info here

The Asbury Park Complete Streets Coalition presents the Light Up the Night Community Bike Ride on Tuesday, August 22 at 6:30 pm. The ride starts in Springwood Park, decorate your bike and throw on some lights, and be sure to wear a helmet if you're under 17! More info here

NJTV, New Jersey's public television network, hosts a public conversation on the links between Health, Quality of Life, and Economic Disparity in Asbury Park on Wednesday, August 23 at 6 pm in Holy Spirit Church. The conversation will explore economic policies, challenges and opportunities, and how communities are working towards better well-being for all. The forum includes a panel discussion and a Q&A. Hi-Tide and the Surfrider Foundation present an Aloha Friday Beach Sweep on Friday, August 25 to kick off the Asbury Park Surf Music Festival. Help clean up the North Beach at 6 pm, then enjoy the satisfaction of a job well done with post-sweep live music from Bongo Surf, tiki drinks, and food from the Anchor's Bend. More info here

House of Independents and Asbury Park Comedy present Dave Attell, one of Entertainment Weekly's 25 Funniest People in America and the guy behind Insomniac with Dance Attell and Dave's Old Porn on Showtime. Doors open on Friday August 18 at 8 pm, tickets are $35. More info here


KYDS and the Danny Clinch Transparent exhibit present Summer Soul on Sunday August 20, an evening full of creative expressions through music, poetry, singing, and more art. The featuring musical artists include Park on Lark, Stringbean Blues, and Quincy Mumford. Doors open at 3:30 pm, and the event kicks off with a mindfulness meditation at 4 pm. More info here

So You Want to be a Comedian?, Asbury Park's premiere comedy open mic returns on Tuesday, August 22 at 8 pm in the Anchor's Bend. Veterans and newbies alike are welcome to try out new stuff, work up some laughs, or just bask in the limelight! More info here

Walk through Asbury Park's legendary and haunted history with tours from the pros at Paranormal Books and Curiosities. Learn about the  Ghosts and Legends of Asbury's Downtown on Thursday August 17. Explore the  Ghosts of the Boardwalk  on Friday August 18. Tours start at 7 pm and are $12, more info  here.  

Reclaimed Wood Mosaics at the Market AP

The Market AP hosts a Reclaimed Wood Mosaics and Copper Stamping Workshop on Sunday August 20, at 1 pm. Hosted by Sea and Green, the workshop will lead you through selecting found raw and painted wood, then sanding, cutting, hammering, and gluing it into art. Then copper stamping it to boot! All supplies are included, and the workshop is $45 per person. More info here

Art629 hosts Open Studio Painting Sessions on Fridays from noon to 3 pm and Mondays from 5 pm to 8 pm, open to all skill levels and with instruction provided as needed. Bring your own works in progress, start a new project, and get inspired! All supplies are included, and sessions are $20 an hour. More info here

Uncorked hosts  Paint and Sips and open studio sessions almost every night of the week, where you can flex those creative muscles and enjoy some good beverages with friends and family! More info  here

Words! bookstore hosts a  Children's Story Time  on Thursdays, from 11:30 am to 12 pm. Children of all ages are welcome for stories, games, songs, and fun, content mostly geared towards kids under 5. More info  here

The Asbury Park Public Library hosts Children's Story Time at 1 pm on Monday through Friday, with special Children's Crafts on Tuesdays at 2 pm. More info here

The Asbury Park Sunset Farmer's Market runs every Saturday through October (weather permitting) at Fireman's Park, at Sunset Avenue and Main Street. The market includes farm fresh goods, pickles, flowers, baked goods, and more. Hours are from 8 am to 1 pm, more info here

Asbury Fresh is back! The collection of farmers, artists, craftsfolk, and more returns to Kennedy Park on Sundays from 10 am to 3 pm. More info here



New Jersey VegFest returns for a second helping at Convention Hall on Sunday, August 20. From 10 am to 5 pm sample treats and goods from over 45 vegan vendors, with additional beauty products, clothes, arts and crafts, and more for sale. Tickets are $5 in advance and $20 at the door, more info here

Kula Urban Farm presents a Farm to Table Cocktail Party on Sunday, August 20 from 4:30 pm to 7 pm, with wine, passed hors d'eouvres, and the beautiful surroundings of a garden in bloom. The event is free, a donation of $35 is suggested. More info here

Who needs to choose between enjoying an outdoor beverage and enjoying time with your four-legged friend? Yappy Hour at the Wonder Bar is where dog-park-meets-bar, with fun and socializing for you and your pup. All dogs are welcome on Thursdays and Fridays from 4 pm to 7 pm, and on Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 7 pm. Small dogs get the place to themselves on Mondays from 4 pm to 7 pm. Parlor Gallery: "Pleased to Meet You," a group of exhibit of artists who have never exhibited in Parlor Gallery, as well as new works from some of the gallery's favorite returning artists. The exhibit runs through September 11. More info  here

Siren Arts : "Summer of Radical Love" kicking off a summer-long residency and exhibition with featured artists developing and creating works in a range of visual mediums, exploring cultural, racial, sexual, and gender equality. In addition to guest and featured artists, the residency features J Morrison, Caroline Wells Chandler, and Ramekon O'Arwisters. More info   here

THE MIDWIFE (two of French cinema's biggest actresses star in this story of the unlikely friendship the develops between an uptight midwive and the free-spirited mistress of her later father)
MAURICE (a 30th anniversary restored version of the 1987 film, about the passion between two young men in pre-World War I England, when homosexuality was punishable by imprisonment.)

Purple Rain at the Asbury Hotel

The Baronet Theater at the Asbury Hotel kicks off their summer series of outdoor screenings in earnest, with movies every night of the week (weather permitting)! The lineup features   the Prince soundtrack-delivery-device Purple Rain on Thursday August 17, an animated inside look at a preteen's emotions in Inside Out on Saturday August 19, everything is awesome in the Lego Movie on Sunday August 20, post-breakup comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall on Monday August 21, the thrilling conclusion to the saga in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 on Tuesday August 22, and a darkly comic Robin Williams as the World's Greatest Dad on Wednesday August 23. Screenings starts at 8:30 pm, tickets are $7.  More info  here .  

Shore Flicks brings your movie favorites out to the beach with free screenings this month on the Second Avenue Beach, starting half an hour after sunset (between 8:30 and 9:30, approximately). On Thursday, August 17 see the tourism industry of Amity Island take a real hit in Jaws. Screenings are free, but please bring canned goods for the nightly food drive. More info here

Brian Anderson at the ShowRoom

ROLLING! Asbury Park presents a screening and discussion of Brian Anderson: on Being a Gay Pro Skateboarder, a documentary by Vice Magazine on the hero of the skateboarding community, who still kept his sexuality a secret from nearly everyone in his life for many eyars. The screening is on Thursday, August 17 at 7 pm, and is followed by a discussion with Director Giovanni Reda and Brian Anderson. More info here

The ShowRoom hosts a pre-release screening of Viceroy's House, with an in-person post-film Q and A with Director Gurinda Chadha and moderator Chuck Rose on Wednesday, August 23 at 7:30 pm. Lord Mountbatten arrives in India with his wife as the last Viceroy, tasked with overseeing the transfer of power from England to the newly-independent India. Despite hopes for a peaceful transition, the sub-continent is rocked by religious and cultural transition which threatens to tear India apart. More info here

Since 1988, HABcore has provided permanent housing for people in Monmouth and Ocean Counties, focusing on people who are homeless, in danger of becoming homeless, disabled, or unable to care for themselves. HABcore promotes self-sufficiency in a family-like atmosphere, providing residents with tools to reach their highest level of independent living. Volunteers are always needed, both individual and group volunteers, for a one-time event or ongoing programs.
