Greetings!
This week The Little brings you two brilliant new films- one that
shows the artistry of a cinematic genius from the past, and another
that revels in the future of film narrative.
First is the highly-anticipated follow-up to The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, The
Girl Who Played With Fire. Once again we find ourselves
embroiled in the dark and action-filled world of Lisbeth Salander.
This time the audience gets a peak at her past and what has led to
her current state. Suspenseful and engrossing, this second
installment does what most in a trilogy have failed to do- it is
even better than the
first! You won't want to miss this one! Be advised, as with the
first film, this film contains graphic violence which is central to
its plot.
On the other side of the coin comes Wild Grass, from 87-year-old
Alain Resnais, one of the godfathers of modern cinema with films
like Hiroshima mon amour
and Last Year at Marienbad.
The film is a wonderful treat for the eyes as well as the heart. A
touching and delightful romance with lots of twists and turns to
keep you intrigued, the film is a true 'art film'. Resnais has not
lost his sense of the avant- garde and Wild Grass is a very true example
of what it means to be a real Auteur. A very 'Little' film to be
sure!

"One of the best films of the
year. Absolutely see it!"
-Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune
Nic and Jules (three-time Academy-Award nominee Annette Bening
and four-time Academy-Award nominee Julianne Moore) are married and
share a cozy suburban Southern California home with their teenage
children, Joni and Laser (Mia Wasikowska and Josh Hutcherson).Nic
and Jules - or, when referred to jointly by Joni, "Moms" - gave
birth to and raised their children, and built a family life for the
four of them. As Joni prepares to leave for college, 15-year-old
Laser presses her for a big favor. He wants Joni, now 18, to help
him find their biological father; the two teenagers were conceived
by donor insemination.
Against her better judgment, Joni honors her brother's request
and manages to make contact with "bio-dad" Paul (Mark Ruffalo), an
easygoing restaurateur. The kids find themselves drawn to the
confirmed bachelor's footloose style - especially in contrast to
Nic, a principled doctor who has long established their house
rules. Jules, who has been looking to start a new career in
landscaping, also strikes up a rapport with Paul. As Paul comes
into the lives of the forthright four, an unexpected new chapter
begins for them as family ties are defined, re-defined, and then
re-re-defined.

In the highly anticipated second
installment of the Millennium Trilogy...
Lisbeth Salander is a wanted woman. A
researcher and a Millennium journalist about to expose the truth
about the sex trade in Sweden are brutally murdered, and Salander's
prints are on the weapon. Her history of unpredictable and vengeful
behavior makes her an official danger to society - but no-one can
find her anywhere.
Meanwhile, Mikael Blomkvist,
editor-in-chief of Millennium, will not believe what he hears on
the news. Knowing Salander to be fierce when fearful, he is
desperate to get to her before she is cornered and alone. As he
fits the pieces of the puzzle together, he comes up against some
hardened criminals, including the chainsaw-wielding 'blond giant' -
a fearsomely huge thug who can feel no pain.
Digging deeper, Blomkvist also unearths
some heart-wrenching facts about Salander's past life. Committed to
psychiatric care aged 12, declared legally incompetent at 18, this
is a messed-up young woman who is the product of an unjust and
corrupt system. Yet Lisbeth is more avenging angel than helpless
victim - descending on those that have hurt her with a righteous
anger terrifying in its intensity and truly wonderful in its
outcome.

"A
sophisticated and visually playful masterpiece"
- Time Magazine
A Lifetime Achievement Award received at the 2009 Cannes Film
Festival suggests that the best work from 60-year-veteran French
director Alain Resnais lies in his illustrious past. Wild Grass (Les Herbes folles), a
lively romantic comedy that premiered at the 2009 Cannes Festival
before traveling to the Toronto International Film Festival and the
New York Film Festival, says otherwise. The story of an unexpected romance
between a couple (Resnais regulars Sabine Azma and Andr
Dussollier) that meet over a lost wallet, Wild Grass is colorful, smart and
brought to vivid life via the rich performances.
At first glance, Wild Grass
may appear frivolous compared to 1959's Hiroshima mon amour or landmark
documentary, Night and Fog,
but Resnais has displayed great variety of storytelling throughout
his expansive career and proven over and over again that not all of
his films need be as experimental or as serious as Last Year at Marienbad.
Based on Christian Gailly's novel, "The Incident", from a faithful
screenplay by Laurent Herbiet and Alex Reval, Wild Grass treats its
fascinating, complex, adult characters with warmth, respect and
also intelligence. Still, there's no denying the great humor
throughout the film.

"A sumptuous recreation of
1920s France and the unbridled affair between two of the century's
most iconic figures."
- Richard Mowe, Boxoffice
Magazine
The brief love
affair between two 20th century icons is dramatized in this period
drama from director Jan Kounen. Igor Stravinsky (Mads Mikkelsen)
was one of Europe's most promising new composers when in 1913 he
premiered his ballet Le Sacre du Printemps (aka The Rite of
Spring); the piece proved to be wildly controversial, and the
audience at the Paris debut was vocal in their disgust, ruining
Stravinsky's reputation for years. One patron who did like the
performance was Coco Chanel (Anna Mouglalis), who was already among
Europe's most celebrated fashion designers. Seven years later,
Chanel encounters Stravinsky at a party, and learns that the
composer is penniless and without a place to live.
Chanel befriends him, and allows him to move into her summer home
in the country along with his wife, Catherine (Elena Morozova), and
their four children. Chanel is nursing a broken heart after the
recent death of her boyfriend, and what began as an act of
compassion for a fellow artist turns into an affair of the heart as
Chanel and Stravinsky become lovers, much to the chagrin of the
sickly Catherine.
