Rehabilitation
Through Proper Strength Training
Claire Ullrich
Rehab and MedEx Specialist

When you have pain in a joint, the last thing you want to do is use weight training to stress it.  Although it may seem counterintuitive to apply resistance to an area of your body that is sore, it is widely accepted and encouraged to strength train the muscles that surround an arthritic or weakened joint, such as the hip or knee.  If the issue, for example, is so bad that it can even hurt to walk, think of how much you could alleviate pain with proper strength training to the muscles above and below the knee joint.  A monitored program using weight machines, is the safest and best way to 'rehabilitate' your body to function at it's highest level.

It is often perceived that our rehab program here at IHC is only tailored towards improving low back pain.  That, however, is not  the case.  Our specialized rehabilitation equipment, coupled with the proper communication between the chiropractor and the rehab specialist, can be adapted for almost any individual health care need.  Our MedX machines, which are considered the leading rehabilitation machines in the industry, are designed to work the whole body - from hips to knees to shoulders to neck, back and ankles.  Current research proves that the best outcome for maintaining a pain free and functional status is to complete a monitored exercise program and we think our rehab/MedEx program is the best available!  We guarantee that we can show you results in 4 visits or your money back!

Why Supplement with Vitamin D?
Kayla Audette
Registered Holistic Nutritionist
Nutrition and Footwear Associate

Vitamin D is commonly known as the “sunshine vitamin” because the sun is a major source of Vitamin D for humans.  Despite it’s name, vitamin D is not a regular vitamin - it is actually a steroid hormone that you get primarily from either sun exposure or supplementation, and its ability to influence genetic expression is what produces many of its wide-ranging health benefits.

Are you aware that 80% of North Americans are vitamin D deficient?  Vitamin D deficiency is now actually recognized as a pandemic. This is mainly due to the fact that very few foods actually contain vitamin D along with our societal concern over too much sun exposure causing many of us to wear sunscreen which decreases the ability for synthesis of vitamin D3 in the skin.

Vitamin D however is essential can modulate immune responses, fight infections, including colds and the flu, as it regulates the expression of genes that influence your immune system to attack and destroy bacteria and viruses.

Deficiency in vitamin D is associated with increased autoimmunity as well as an increased susceptibility to infection. As immune cells in autoimmune diseases are responsive to the nourishing effects of vitamin D, the beneficial effects of supplementing vitamin D deficient individuals (with autoimmune disease i.e. MS, IBD) may extend beyond the effects on bone and calcium homeostasis (bone density).

Because vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, its absorption depends on the gut's ability to absorb dietary fat. Individuals who have a reduced ability to absorb dietary fat require vitamin D supplementation. Fat malabsorption is associated with a variety of medical conditions, including some forms of liver disease, cystic fibrosis, celiac disease, and Crohn's disease, as well as ulcerative colitis.

Obesity does not affect skin's capacity to synthesize vitamin D, but greater amounts of subcutaneous fat isolates more of the vitamin and stalls its release into circulation. In addition, obese individuals who have undergone gastric bypass surgery may become vitamin D deficient over time without a sufficient intake of this nutrient from supplementation since part of the upper small intestine where vitamin D is absorbed is bypassed.

Feeling tired and achy is a frequent wintertime complaint but you may be vitamin D deficient. According to Dr Michael F. Holick, PhD., M.D. (leading authority on vitamin D), many will see their Doctor for such signs and end up being misdiagnosed as having fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome. Many of these symptoms are signs of vitamin D deficiency osteomalacia. Different from the vitamin D deficiency that causes osteoporosis in adults, he says what’s happening is that the vitamin D deficiency causes a defect in putting calcium into the collagen matrix into your skeleton. As a result, you have throbbing, aching bone pain.

Did you know corticosteroid medications such as prednisone, often prescribed to reduce inflammation, reduce calcium absorption and impair vitamin D metabolism? These effects can further contribute to the loss of bone and the development of osteoporosis associated with their long-term use.

It's important to remember that if you're taking high dose vitamin D supplements, you also need to take vitamin K2. The biological role of vitamin K2 is to help move calcium into the proper areas in your body, such as your bones and teeth. It also helps remove calcium from areas where it shouldn't be, such as in your arteries and soft tissues such as the heart.

Daryl's All Natural Protein Bars
Freya Ames
Fitness Associate/ Personal Trainer Specialist

I struggle with the odd aftertaste that many Protein bars have, so when I first tried a Daryl bar I was very pleased with the natural ingredients and flavour. I truly like the fact that you refrigerate the bars, feels more like real food to me.
They have 22 grams of protein in each bar and average 220 calories.Sugar content is at around 3% which is acceptable for me.   Also, they offer Gluten free options!
A big thumbs up for me.
