Have we forgotten about peace?

In 2016 and 2017, we spent 18 months affirming "May peace prevail in the hearts and minds of all beings" and meditating on peace.  At Unity of Lehigh Valley, we have added this affirmation to be the last words we say in closing our Sunday service.

There was not overwhelming attendance at the monthly evening sessions in 2017 and so in 2018 we discontinued the monthly peace meditation practice.  And somehow it feels like I miss it.  Perhaps merely holding the intention was sufficient to change the energy in me, in the ministry and maybe in the world.  And so, as an aid to my own peaceful practice, I'd like to reinstate the peace practice.  I hope the "pause for peace" can make a difference in your life when so many are asking for a path to peace.

I invite you to once again hold the intention "May peace prevail in the hearts and minds of all beings."  Peace has to begin within.  We want to start by affirming "May peace prevail in my heart and my mind."  Hold the intention to pause once a day to repeat this simple affirmation.  Pick an easy time to remember and use a reminder on your phone or ipod if that feels helpful.  And on the last Wednesday of each month, we will hold a half hour space for meditation in the sanctuary at 6pm.  I am moving the time to Wednesday so it does not impact choir practice and I am often teaching classes on Wednesday.  You do not have to come to the sanctuary to participate but you are welcome to. If you have a peace reading to share at the meditation in the sanctuary, please bring it along.

Live in peace, love and harmony in the world this week!

 Meditation Practice
Saturday, March 3rd
10am to 3pm

We hear a lot about the benefits of meditation and some of us have a regular practice.  What if you are one of those people who just don't think meditation works for you or you just can't find the time?  This Saturday time is just for you!

We will explore different practices that are all considered meditation practices.  Some are moving, some involve the senses, and some are a more traditional quiet practice.  Come join Reverend Joy and fellow meditation explorers!

A light lunch is included in the $25 registration fee.  Advance registration is required.  Forms are available at the church office and on our website.  Wear comfortable clothing and bring any cushions, wraps or pillows for your comfort.  A journal can be helpful.  Give yourself the gift of this Saturday time apart from the rush of the days.

ULV Women's Retreat at Dewey Beach,
Sept 14-16

It is not too late to register!  Plan now to attend and get your deposit to Ginny.

This year the annual time for the women of ULV to gather at Dewey Beach is being redesigned to keep elements many have enjoyed about the time away and to add elements to give it more of a sense of spiritual retreat.  There will be activities to join us in a feeling of unity and activities to celebrate our unique gifts.

There are 12 openings with the potential for 15.  The total cost is $160 per person for two nights in shared rooms of 3 villas.  A deposit of $80 per person is due to Ginny Stanglein as soon as possible.  More details will be available soon and you can contact Ginny with any questions or concerns.

New Lent Class: Centered In Prayer
 Wednesday 7-8:30pm
February 21 thru March 28

Our Lent series will use two very different texts.  Please purchase your books in advance of class.

The Universe Is Calling by Eric Butterworth is a classic Unity book by a beloved author. We will compare and contrast the language in this book with Everything Belongs: Contemplative Prayer by Richard Rohr.  Unity does not view Lent as a time of penance or self-deprivation but a time of preparation for the transformation represented by the resurrection of Easter.  Join Reverend Joy as we explore prayer as a part of transformation.  Class will be offered on a Love Offering basis.  Please read the first two chapters in each book before the first class.

Lent begins February 14th this year.  Prepare for the Lent season by getting your Lent Meditation Guide from Unity.  You can download the material or order it without charge from Unity's Website.
CLICK HERE to get your booklet.  The title is taken from Charles Fillmore's classic text but the booklet is filled with the modern language and ideas of contemporary Unity writers.

  News from Reverend Joy

On February 10th I will travel to Kansas City for my first board meeting as a member of  the Board of Directors of Unity World Headquarters UWH.  There will be four onsite meetings at Unity Village per year and this will be my first.

In May and June I will be taking a two month sabbatical.  This is a healthy practice for ministers and I will be in my tenth year of ministry.  I plan to travel to spend time with family and friends; I will be attending a board meeting at UWH and later the annual Unity conference in Kansas City; and I hope to spend some time in spiritual retreat and writing.  I'll be back in July to begin our summer series "The 12 Powers and American History".
Art Objects

During our renovations of the sanctuary, several items were taken down.  Some of the items will have new homes.  And maybe a couple of them might be seeking a home with you!

The "Scroll of Jerusalem" in the gold frame and the large Lesta Bertoia painting " Circle of Dancers " are both available.  We are holding an open auction with sealed bids.  The minimum bid is $100 for each object.  There are slips of paper to record your bid information on next to the objects.  Please fill out a slip and place it in an envelop and seal the envelop.  We will open bids and announce the winner at the end of the Annual Meeting!

We are grateful for Spirit's abundance as we celebrate the gifts that flow through this ministry over the years.

What are you grateful for?
