Check Out What's Been Happening at H.I.M.

September-October-November-December 2013
As this year comes to a close, we are amazed at just how fast it has gone by. These last four months have been no exception, being jam packed both stateside as well as in Guatemala which has kept us very busy. Below you will find some of the highlights filling you in on the activities of H.I.M.

Golf Fundraiser

A huge thank you to Our Savior's Lutheran Church for holding a Golf Outing on September 14th to benefit the work of H.I.M. We are so grateful for the many years of faithful support they have shown us over the years. Thanks, Pastor Scot and all those who helped to make this event possible.

Traveling With Family?

There is something about traveling with family, without the constant interruptions of daily living in the U.S., that can actually bring a family closer together. When serving others together and trying to make a difference in the lives of people living in an impoverished third world country, family relationships change to something even better. Members of the Roche Family have been traveling to Guatemala with H.I.M. during the month of July since 2001 beginning with Marcia McGinnis and her husband, Steve Roche. Numerous family members have joined them since then. Margaret Roche Moore and Barbara Roche Engers have also joined Marcia on October trips for several years. This past July, the Roche Family reached a new milestone when 10 family members came, which included Steve's 4 sisters, 2 nieces and 2 nephews! How is that for family togetherness! Of those, only 3 were actually "new" to the HIM experience with the others having participated on past July and October trips. Stories from our trips can inspire our future generations to also vacation with a purpose . . . submitted by Marcia McGinnis

Sweet Dreams

In September, H.I.M. purchased mats for the La Fragua Daycare in Guatemala. This daycare has been operating for the past 20 years by a single woman out of her home. When we heard that the children were laying on the hard floor to rest, we instantly sprang into motion and supplied them with mats for the children to lay on.
Another Container Hits
The Road to Guatemala

On September 28th, H.I.M. loaded a container full of medical, dental, physical therapy, firefighter and variety of other miscellaneous items to be shipped down to Guatemala. Every single item on that container was donated by people like you. Thank you to all of you have so unselfishly gave to help others in need.

Children's Day In Guatemala

October 1st is designated as Children's Day in Guatemala. We spent the day throwing parties at the 4 daycares that are involved in our Child Sponsorship Program. There was cake, piatas and games to celebrate the day. We had lots of fun!!!
We'll Miss You, Dear Friend . . .
Martin Nielson, Jr.

Over the years, he could be found in the Indiana office as well as in Guatemala where he helped out with the construction teams until his health grounded him back in the states. We had hot dogs, chips, lemonade and one of our faithful volunteers, Jackie Koronkowski made delicious cakes to help celebrate the day. Thank you to all who have made this past year a success . . . from our volunteers, to our customers as well as those who donate all the items for our store. We are grateful for each one of you!

Guatemalan Firefighter Training Here In The States

A huge thank you to the firefighters at Homer Glen, IL and Carol Stream, IL for hosting the training for the Guatemalan "Bomberos" this past November. Many firefighters from surrounding areas also helped to train them in SCBA training, live fires, confined spaces and forcible entry, ropes, slope rescue, flashover simulator and extrication. No one will ever know the number of people who will be greatly impacted because of this valuable program. We are so grateful for those firefighters who embrace the need for this type of training and are willing to give of themselves in this special way.

Firefighter Equipment Donation

Homer Glen, IL firefighters responded to the great need for firefighter equipment in the impoverished areas we serve in Guatemala by orchestrating a drive to collect equipment from local fire departments. Thank you for seeing the need and working together to help better equip these fire departments who have little or no access to these types of items which may results in many unnecessary injuries or even deaths.

H.I.M. Makes Homeless Hygiene Packs

Hearts In Motion joined forces with the Carpenter's House Church in Humboldt Park, IL to make hygiene packs to be distributed to the homeless in Chicago. A special thank you to the Carpenter's House Church for your amazing heart to help those in need in the inner-city of Chicago.

ITT Tech Nursing Students Volunteer

We are very happy to announce a new addition to our University program. ITT nursing students are joining the H.I.M. family this year. Karen Helmecy, professor of Gerontology at ITT, wanted her students to understand all the different nursing needs and service possibilities that are available in the world today. In November, 16 students were here at the Munster office to help organize medications and supplies. H.I.M. is looking forward to this partnership with Karen Helmecy and her students. Thanks ITT!

H.I.M. Attends The National Catholic Youth Conference In Indianapolis

We are so excited to have been invited by St. Michael's Church in Louisville, KY to be a part of this amazing event. Over 30,000 High School students came out to participate in this three day conference. H.I.M. was represented in two venues, one was under the area of Understanding with the Bible verse from Proverbs 2:2 as our theme "Set your heart on a life of understanding" portraying the message of. - "Now that you know . . . what will you do?" Bracelets were made by the students with the key action words of: Pray, Go, Love, Serve, Feed and Give. We also had a booth where we able to sell Guatemalan items to help support those we serve in Guatemala. Many new friends were made and an excitement for mission work was generated in those we met.

Inner City Children of Chicago Christmas Angel Tree Project

H.I.M. has partnered with the Carpenter's House of Chicago to collect Christmas gifts for 65 underprivileged children in the Humboldt Park area of Chicago. We have a tree located in our Resale Shoppe encouraging our customers to help support this project by taking a child's name off the tree, purchasing a gift and return to us to be distributed to that child. Thank you for all who are helping us to bring Christmas to these children.

H.I.M. Resale Shoppe's

We are so excited to once again display Christmas Trees from other local non-profits and businesses throughout our community in our Resale Shoppe. Each one of these Christmas Trees are uniquely decorated by them with ornaments which can be purchased to help support their organizations.

Local Carolers Perform At Our Resale Shoppe

This is the 2nd year we have invited local musical groups to carol for our customers in our Resale Shoppe. Every Thursday night during the month of December we are ushered into the spirit of Christmas as beautiful music of the season surrounds us. This year, Books, Brushes & Bands, a nonprofit from Hammond, IN, Merrillville Intermediate School Choir from Merrillville, IN and the Munster High School Choir from Muster, IN will be our guests. We look forward to this special time of year and would like to thank each one of you for sharing your talents with us.

ATI physical therapy has been collecting PT supplies from the Midwest region. The supplies include walkers, crutches and various therapeutic aides.
