Star Party!

Thursday, Aug. 20, 7:30-9:00

The North Shore Amateur Astronomy Club will give a short astronomy presentation in our large meeting room, followed by observation of the night sky through club telescopes on the field behind the library.

This program is for all ages. Please register to attend at the Reference desk or email Kim Claire kclaire@mvlc.org. In case of rain or heavy cloud cover, the back-up date for this event is Tuesday, August 25. 
Community Giving Tree

School Supplies for Community Giving Tree Last year 1,500 filled backpacks were distributed to local children of struggling families. Your donation of a backpack and/or some supplies by Aug. 22 helps set up a child for academic success.  
Six members of the Teen Think Tank hopped a chartered Beauport mini bus and went shopping, Saturday, July 18, at Barnes and Noble for books to add to the Library's teen collections. Each teen had a budget of $80 to spend. They selected 32 items for the collections, including graphic novels, nonfiction, biographies, fiction, and 1 game. Each shopper checked the Library's online catalog to make sure we did not already own the book before adding it to the purchase pile. This field trip has become an annual event for the TTT.

The Teen Think Tank, begun in 2007, is for ages 11 and up. It is the teen advisory board for the Library.  They meet 11 times a year, usually on the first Thursday of the month for 90 minutes. The TTT works with Young Adult Librarian, Kim Claire, to improve all YA collections, and to create programs and services designed specifically for teens. Come share your bright ideas; they matter. Be heard, see your ideas realized, and contribute to your community, while earning your volunteer hours for high school credit. School Summer Reading: titles are all on display in the second floor Teen Area, divided by grade. Copies go out for 3 weeks and cannot be renewed; your classmates need a chance to read it, too. The entire list is linked to the catalog on the Informed Teens Blog.   

  

MAGE [Minecraft & Assorted Games for Everyone] meets Tuesdays 5:00-7:00 until Sept. 1.  MAGE is run by teens for all ages who play well with others. Bring your laptop and have an active Minecraft membership. One Rule: No Griefing Ever. For more information contact your Young Adult Librarian, Kim Claire

Keep your eyes peeled as you travel about Hamilton and Wenham this summer! Once you spot our mascot, Dyno, come in and write where you saw him and your name and age on a raffle ticket. His location changes weekly! Game ends Aug. 21. One entry per visit to the library please.

The Book Clubs
Wednesday Night Book Club 
The book for Aug. 5 is Robert Kurson's Shadow Divers. Copies are available today. Sept. 2 meeting has a title change: Last Days of Dogtown by Anita Diamant, since the wait list for Boston Girl is still quite long. We have copies of Last Days of Dogtown available at the library. 
Escape the Ordinary
The last stop in the adult summer reading  journey is Tunisia by way of Charles Cumming's A Foreign Country. Swing by the Library to collect your copy then join us on Tue. Aug. 11 at 11:00. This concludes the summer tour of 'Escape the Ordinary'.
Literary Luncheon
Join us on the third Tuesday of every month, Sept. to May. If you want to get a jump on the first book, it's Under the Wide and Starry Sky by Nancy Horan. Stop in at 11:30 for discussion on Sept. 15, don't forget your brown-bag lunch, beverages will be provided, as well as a little something extra inspired by the book.
