HAFTR ALUMNI FEATURE
Jonathan Miller
(HAFTR H.S. CLASS OF 2006)

WHAT YEAR DID YOU GRADUATE HAFTR?

I attended HAFTR from 1994-2006 (Kindergarten - 12th grade)

WHAT SCHOOL(S) DID YOU ATTEND AFTER GRADUATING FROM HAFTR?

I received my Bachelors of Arts degree in History from Yeshiva University and also attended The George Washington University for 2 years.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE IN THE IDF.

I served in the IDF Civil Administration of the territories (West Bank) as part of my army service.  This position was combat support, and involved intelligence gathering and security planning in accordance with various IDF combat forces, border police, and other agencies.

WHAT WAS THE MOST EXCITING PART OF THIS JOURNEY? WHAT WERE SOME CHALLENGES YOU FACED?

My IDF service wasn't voluntary, but rather mandatory since I made Aliyah and had to follow Israeli enlistment law.  I really enjoyed my time making amazing friends and learning new life skills that I will hold onto forever.  The language barrier was a challenge at first, but with time and effort my conversational Hebrew greatly improved.  Basic Training also wasn't a walk in the park.  There is a huge amount of psychological stress that comes with being in an army and I advise people to keep that in mind as well as the physical challenges that come with it as well.

NOW THAT YOU'VE FINISHED SERVING IN THE IDF, WHAT ARE YOU DOING TODAY?

After getting released from the IDF I have joined Haaretz.com.  I do proofreading, news aggregating, and comment moderating.  I love working at a newspaper and want to pursue a career in journalism, and hopefully writing soon.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FONDEST HAFTR MEMORIES?

Looking back I have so many fond memories of HAFTR.  For example, our 2006 senior trip to Virginia Beach will always be a great memory (especially the bus ride on the way back). I especially loved my High School years and the guidance I received from various teachers and Rebbeim.

ARE YOU STILL IN TOUCH WITH ANY OF YOUR HIGH SCHOOL PEERS?

While sometimes it's difficult due to the time difference, I try and maintain close contact and friendships with my HAFTR friends.  Many of them have started families of their own and I wish them much happiness and success in the future!

HAFTR FACULTY FEATURE

Rabbi Elisha (Rodney) Weiss
(HAFTR E.S. CLASS OF 1983)

WHAT YEARS DID YOU ATTEND HAFTR?

I graduated from HAFTR's 8th grade in June of 1983.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE SUBJECT IN SCHOOL?

I really enjoyed learning Gemorah thanks to the Great Rebbeim that I had.

WHAT ACTIVITIES WERE YOU INVOLVED IN AT HAFTR?

I had done Chidon HaTanach and took a very active role in the minyan which included being a Gabbai.

WHERE DID YOU GO TO SCHOOL ONCE GRADUATING FROM HAFTR?

I went to MTA for High School, in 1987-88 I learned in Yeshivat Kerem B'Yavneh in Eretz Yisroel. I went on To Yeshiva University where I earned a BA in History, a Masters in Jewish Education from Azrieli Graduate Institute and Semicha from RIETS.

WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT POSITION AT HAFTR?

I am the 5th Grade Boys' Rebbe at HAFTR Lower School

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT BEING A TEACHER AT HAFTR?

I come in each and every day with a sense of nostalgia. I have also felt welcomed from day one.

IS THERE ANYTHING YOU SEE TODAY AT HAFTR THAT YOU WISH YOU HAD WHEN YOU WERE A STUDENT? HOW HAS THE SCHOOL CHANGED?

The programming at HAFTR is excellent like a class in social skills and of course MI Time really enhances the programing and opportunities for each student.

I think the school is very sensitive to the needs of the individual students. The term differentiated learning is not just something said but acted on through the many services that the school provides. If you walk through the school, you see the many smart boards and the ongoing efforts to use technology in the classroom.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR HOBBIES?

I am a sports fan and very interested in History especially historic movies and miniseries.

YOU ARE ALSO THE RABBI OF A SHUL- TELL US ABOUT THAT EXPERIENCE.

Being a Rabbi of a shul is a very challenging part of my life. For one, I feel like I am always on call. When I leave school, my day is not over, there is learning and other programing that I participate in as well as pastoral responsibilities.

However, it should be noted that it has enhanced my ability as a Rebbe. I have become very sensitive to family issues and challenges of raising children in this generation. I feel like I would not be successful as a Rebbe if not for my shul experience.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY.

Together with my wife Elisheva, We are married 17 years and have a 16 son (Meir), 14 year old daughter (Adina) and a 4 year old daughter (Avigail). We live in Brooklyn and I am the Rabbi of Merkaz Yisroel of Marine Park. My wife is a School Psychologist who works for the Department of Education near our home.

HAFTR ALUMNI COUPLE

Adina Zellner Bienstock

(HAFTR H.S. Class of 2003)

& Daniel Bienstock

(HAFTR H.S. Class of 2003)

WHAT YEARS DID YOU GO TO HAFTR?
Adina: 1988 - 2003 (3 year old nursery - high school)
Daniel: 1999-2003 (high school)

HOW DID YOU BECOME A COUPLE?
Daniel: We met each other at a mutual friend's birthday party in 10th grade, but didn't really become close until the beginning of 12th grade. It all started the night before Thanksgiving during Senior Year. I was sitting in the parking lot on Central Avenue with Joshua Chubak just having come from Pizza Dave and we were about to pay a surprise visit to Daniel Simhaee in Great Neck. We were about to leave when all of a sudden we heard a knock at the car window. It was Adina and Aliza 'Myers' Ellberger. They ended up joining us on our trip to Daniel Simhaee's house. From that night forward we began to hang out almost every night.

Adina: After Thanksgiving of senior year, we continued to hang out as just friends, going out for lunch and studying for physics tests together. When we both went away with our respective families for winter break we realized how much we missed each other and my friend and fellow HAFTR alum Aliza 'Myers' Ellberger encouraged us to officially start dating. Our old high school friends laugh whenever they still hear me call Daniel by his high school nickname, "Beenie" (short for Bienstock), because now I'm a "Beenie" too!

WHEN DID YOU KNOW HE/SHE WAS THE ONE?
Right after high school Daniel went to Cornell for a year while Adina went to Barnard. It was really the first instance since we started dating that we spent an extended period of time away from each other- and we hated it! It was obvious that we could never stand to be apart from each other again. The next year Daniel transferred to Penn which was about 2 hours closer. We got engaged during our last year of college and got married the summer after.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE HAFTR MEMORY TOGETHER?
Adina: Attending Daniel's "Hebrew Language and Culture Society" meetings as the only member and Daniel attending mine and Samantha Weltz's "Poetry Club" meetings as the only member.

Daniel: I used to love to go out to lunch with Adina. Its amazing that we still go out today to the same places we used to go to back in high school.

IF YOU COULD HAVE LUNCH WITH ONE TEACHER TODAY, WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY?
Adina: Dr. Treuman (chemistry), as long as he would be willing to share his candy bars.

Daniel: Mrs. Robbins (Spanish), as long as she is willing to bring her boombox and easy-going attitude.

WHAT ITEM WAS ALWAYS IN YOUR LOCKER/BACKPACK?
Daniel: A list of b'china vocabulary words on which Adina wrote "DORK" at the top.

Adina: A list of b'china vocabulary words on which Daniel wrote "NERD" at the top.

IF YOUR FRIENDS FROM HAFTR COULD DESCRIBE YOU IN ONE WORD OR PHRASE, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Adina: Genuine

Daniel: "Student of the Year" (DEAH)

WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE CLASSROOM MOMENT (WITH A TEACHER?CLASSMATE?)
Adina: Elisheva Levine and I used to work on the most elaborate school projects/presentations together. In middle school we made a video for Torah She' Baal Peh class that involved dressing up my family's dog as Moshe Rabeinu and guinea pig as the Para Adumah. In high school our collaborations continued in French class where we made up a commercial for a dating service using exaggerated French accents.

Daniel: One day Eric Bondarsky and I began to look around Rabbi Brisman's class and noticed that very few people were actually paying attention. We decided to make a log of what everyone was doing. We began on one side of the class and wrote one line about what different people were doing while class was going on. The activities ranged from sleeping to arm wrestling to doing homework for Ms. Sabella's class later that day.

WHERE DID YOU GO TO SCHOOL ONCE YOU GRADUATED?
Adina: Barnard College

Daniel: Cornell University (for one year) then transferred to the University of Pennsylvania

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY AND YOUR LIVES TODAY.
After college, we got married and moved to Boston for graduate school. Adina went to graduate school for School Psychology and Daniel went to Dental School. Now we live in Woodmere, NY and Adina is home with our 2 1/2 year old son Zachary and 3 month old twin boys Joshua and Benjamin. Daniel is a resident in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Columbia University Medical Center.

NOT ONLY ARE YOU HAFTR ALUMNI, BUT YOU'VE RECENTLY JOINED THE HAFTR FAMILY AS PARENTS. TELL US ABOUT WATCHING ZACHARY'S EXPERIENCE AT HAFTR.
Zachary is learning so much already. We love seeing all of the beautiful holiday-related projects he brings home from school and hearing him sing songs for each jewish holiday. We hope he makes lifelong friendships like we did and maybe even meets his bashert at HAFTR!

ARE YOU STILL FRIENDS WITH ANY OF YOUR CLASSMATES?
Adina: My HAFTR friends are still some of my closest friends today! It was so nice seeing everyone at our 10 year reunion in December. Even though it was in the middle of a snow storm, it was amazing how many people made it.

Daniel: Absolutely! I am still in close contact with many of my friends from High School.
