Can the Students Have a Field Trip at Your Jobsite?

Eaton Regional Education Service Agency and the Career Preparation Center have been in partnership with Lansing Community College and offer career preparation programs to high school students from over 25 area high schools. Students learn a transferable skill, earn high school credit, and have the opportunity to earn actual college credit upon completion of the program.

As a part of the career preparation process, students are required to do a job shadow. Students contact a company of interest which pertains to construction and set up a job shadow. The job shadows are set up for Thursday, April 2 2015. Before, during and after completion of these job shadows the student's complete assignments based on this experience.

The program is always in search of field trip opportunities. During these visits the students observe progress, as well as have the opportunity to speak with multiple trades personnel on the site to learn more about their professions. This exposure for the students is a great asset to them and one that can lead to potential careers. The Construction Technologies course is always looking for assistance to visit other jobsites in various stages of construction and opportunities to talk with different trades people and business professionals either at a worksite, place of business or in the classroom.

If you are interested in more information about providing a student with a job shadow opportunity or fieldtrip to a business or jobsite, please contact; Scott DeRuischer, Instructor at   [email protected] or MaryEllen Brocklehurst at  [email protected] or by phone 517-483-1323.

Presidents Message:
James Magnotta, President

For this month's Tool Box newsletter, I have asked Tim Banfield of Outdoor Living Inc. to share his experience and give us his point of view on the value of being a member of the HBA of Greater Lansing. Tim is a great example of one who fully participates in all of the opportunities that are available when you join the HBA and he has been richly rewarded for his efforts.

After you finish reading Tim's story, call or email Lacey to RSVP for the Monthly Membership Meeting at Azzi Jewelers next Tuesday.  Don't miss out on one of the main benefits of being a member.

Thank you Mr. President! President Jim Magnotta, that is. You are serving as president of our association again and we, the members, are grateful for your sacrifice of time and effort. Not many step up to be the leader and spokes person for the Home Builders Association of Greater Lansing a second time. We appreciate your volunteerism.

You asked me to be a guest writer in this space normally reserved for the president's message. I am honored and promise not to ramble (much). I am beginning my 30th year as a business owner and I continue to be inspired by the simple act of volunteerism witnessed by the actions of the many members of our association...including you.

I attended my first of many association functions in 1976. I had just graduated from MSU and was beginning a career in Landscape Architecture. Two of the first people I met at those early functions had a large influence on my career. One became an employer. The other my partner. When business owners ask me why I have been a member of the association and a former board member for 30+ years, I usually begin the explanation with that fact.

There are many reasons why membership pays back far more than it costs. In my business and personal life, the return on investment has proven that fact. It's not difficult to determine, at this point in my career, that personal relationships developed through membership in the Home Builder's Association were essential in the growth and success of my company. I am grateful to have met and been mentored by many of those successful business owners. There have been too many to list, so I will just take this opportunity to say thanks to all of you.

This is beginning to sound like a retirement acceptance speech. It is not. I am so fortunate and blessed to have chosen a profession that allows me to continue practicing something I love. Call me if you wake up some morning wondering how you are going to get through another day of the same old thing. I love to share my positive attitude as well as encouragement. After all, that has been what I received from the many friends I've met along the way through membership in the HBA and it's my turn to give it back. See you on the job site!

Tim Banfield, owner of Outdoor Living, Inc.

Michigan Builders Trust Fund Act; Avoid Civil and Criminal Penalties

Attorney Zacharia S. Bonham of JKY Legal Group, P.C.
The Michigan Builders Trust Fund Act ("MBTFA"), was enacted to ensure that subcontractors and suppliers were compensated for their labor and materials provided to a specific construction project. In general, the MBTFA secures payment for those lower tiered subcontractors and suppliers. The MBTFA is also used to prevent the commingling of funds between unrelated construction projects. Enforcement of the MBTFA could result in the imposition of civil and/or criminal penalties. Specifically, a felony criminal conviction under the MBTFA could result in a fine between $100.00 and $5,000.00 and/or imprisonment between six (6) months and three (3) years in state prison; MCL 570.152. Gov. Snyder to deliver keynote at Great Lakes Builders Show

DETROIT - Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder will emphasize the importance of training more skilled workers to strengthen and grow the economy, when he addresses thousands of home builders and contractors at the Great Lakes Builders show at Ford Field on March 5.

Snyder has made work force development, particularly in the skilled trades, a focus of his second term. Michigan lost more than 60,000 home construction jobs in the Great Recession. While the industry is making a comeback, growth has been hampered by the lack of skilled workers. Read full article.
