HoCo Developed the OpenHoward Portal to Increase Transparency?
|
Howard County Executive Allan H. Kittleman recently announced the launch of OpenHoward, a new data portal on the county's website. OpenHoward was developed to increase transparency and provide data to the public in a user-friendly way, making information more easily available to residents.
This open data "beta" launch is intended to showcase how data will be delivered. The site currently displays 52 data sets, 17 maps and three charts, and will continue to grow as new data sets become available. Current data sets include records of emergency vehicle dispatch and arrival times, as well as non-emergency service requests made through Tell HoCo. Residents can review service requests for everything from sidewalk repairs and filling potholes to the removal of dead animals and tree limbs from a County owned roadway.
Data collected and made available to the public through the OpenHoward portal is the first phase of a larger initiative championed by County Executive Kittleman called HoCoStat. Future phases of HoCoStat will include analyzing data to heighten accountability and measure outcomes for all county departments and agencies. For residents, this could mean tracking the amount of time it takes to get permits and licenses or the efficiency of local bus transportation.
You can also access the portal from the county's website, www.howardcountymd.gov, by clicking on the OpenData logo at the bottom of the page. Data sets are organized by category, such as public safety, licenses and permits and transportation.

Mosquito Problem? How is Water Draining Away From Your Home?
|

Flexible downspout extensions are often used to direct water away from the foundation of a house. Inexpensive and easy to install, these seem like the perfect way to redirect water. What you may not know is that they are also a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Some water naturally gets trapped in the grooves when it flows out of the extension tubing. Since mosquitoes only need a small amount of water to breed hundreds of larvae, the water left in the grooves becomes the perfect habitat for growth.
Did you know that using above ground drains is also prohibited as per the covenants? All drainage hoses, tubes or pipes must be buried below ground or in a landscape bed to be compliant. Using splash blocks and other solutions to solve your drainage problems is highly recommended. Please contact John McCoy, CA Watershed Manager, at 410-312-6336 for information and additional resources.
