The terms of service for three of our current village board members expires today. We appreciate the time, energy, and commitment Ann DeLacy, Linda Kangrga, and Clarence Lam have given to our community and wish them much success in their future endeavors.

It has been a pleasure to serve on the Harper's Choice Village Board. My sole purpose has been to improve the quality of life for every citizen.

Message from Linda Kangrga
|
I feel privileged to have served on the village board for the past 4 years. As was pointed out to me at the time that I filled in for someone else who was not able to continue their elected office, it is also something that everyone living in the village might consider doing to contribute to shaping our community. Becoming an active participant in our village, shaping where we hope to go as changes become necessary to our aging design, infrastructure, priorities and interests. I will continue to be involved.

Q & A with New Village Board Member Ben Rubin
|
 We are pleased to welcome Ben Rubin to our Village Board, effective May 1. Ben joins returning board members Stephen Cook and Robert Fontaine, and we're excited to see the energy and ideas he will bring to our community.
What is your history with Columbia and more specifically, with Harper's Choice?
I was born less than a mile from Kahler Hall. My first memories are from a townhouse on Rock Coast Rd. I grew up in Running Brook, moved away for University twice, chased my girlfriend (now wife) to Brazil, and returned home to settle down and plant roots of my own.
Why did you want to serve on the Harper's Choice Board?
I have always believed strongly in local government and this is my opportunity to get involved. Harper's Choice is specifically important to me because it is the community in which I will grow into as I have recently bought a townhouse there.
What is your professional background?
Professionally, I have a degree in Political Science from the University of Pittsburgh, an Associates Degree from the Culinary Institute of America, and have worked in hospitality in some form or another my entire adult life. I currently work for an up-and-coming caterer in Gaithersburg.
Anything else that you would like to add?
I am thrilled to be participating on the board and within Harper's Choice. From what I have experienced so far, it is a wonderfully warm, passionate and inviting group, whose knowledge of the community is perfectly supplemented by their desire to help maintain what has made Harper's Choice so special.

Shred and eCycle Event in Harper's Choice
|
Do you have documents with sensitive information to shred or electronics you want to recycle? Join us on Saturday, May 2 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for our Shred and eCycle Event. All the information and details for the big day are listed below.
BASICS: Saturday, May 2 from
9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the parking lot between Kahler Hall and the Bain Center.
GUIDELINES:
Limit 3 small bags/boxes per person for the Shred Truck. eCycle guidelines are listed below. Minimal fees required for some items.
FREE: Computers, Laptops/Notebooks, Keyboards/Mice/Cables, Monitors, Printers, Scanners, Cell & Regular Phones, Fax & Answering Machines, VCR, Cable Boxes, Stereo Equipment, Battery Back-ups (non-alkaline), TV (less than 26" - 1st one free)
FEE-BASED: TVs 26" - 40" ($15), TVs larger than 40" ($25), Console TVs ($35)
NOT ACCEPTED: Microwaves, Refrigerators, Washers/Dryers, Toasters, Dishwashers, Household Appliances

You Can Volunteer to Help with Baltimore Clean-up Efforts?

 Maryland Unites was created as a one-stop shop to provide Marylanders with the resources they need to react and respond to the recent disturbances in Baltimore. This website will enable you to report new incidents to the police, donate to local charities, and volunteer your time to help the residents of Baltimore.

Covenants and Property Maintenance Standards
|
All calls/complaints that come into the Village office are handled confidentially. In order to properly respond to complaints, we need to have some way to contact the person making the complaint. Sometimes the issue is one where we have no authority, such as animal control, noise, rental housing, and parking. In these cases, we would refer the person with the complaint to the responsible authority, such as Police, County Rental Housing, Highways, etc. If we receive an anonymous letter with no return address or contact information, we have no way to try and help and the person who sent the letter may be feeling that their Village does not address their concerns.  The
Family Institute will present a workshop,
Internet Safety 101 for Parents, on Wednesday, May 13 from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. at the Bain Senior Center (5470 Ruth Keeton Way, Columbia) for parent and guardians raising children and adolescents. This session will help parents navigate technology changes and options on teaching their children the basic rules of internet safety so that the entire family can use all devices responsibly.
The cost is free but space is limited so pre-registration is required. Parents can

Kindergarten Curriculum Carnival at Longfellow

 Do you have a student that will be 5 years old by September 1 attending Longfellow Elementary School in the Fall? The mission of the Howard County Master Gardeners is to educate residents about safe, effective, and sustainable horticultural practices that build healthy gardens, landscapes, and communities. The Master Gardener program is administered by the University of Maryland College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Extension Service. Please join them for these upcoming events.

Milkweed Planting & Butterfly Talk

Architectural Committee Meetings
Changes made to the exterior of homes in Harper's Choice require the approval of the Village Architectural Committee. The AC meets on the 2nd and 4th
Tuesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. to review applications. The deadline to submit
applications for approval is two weeks prior to the next meeting date. Upcoming meetings are scheduled for:
5/12, 5/26, 6/9.
