HopeWorks' Has a Youth Leadership Project?

HopeWorks offers two Youth Leadership Projects that are service-learning programs promoting healthy relationships and peaceable living:

  • The Empowerment Movement
  • The Legacy Architects

Each group provides an open and safe space where students can be themselves as they learn to be agents of change.

Open to youth ages 13 to 18, participants in both groups explore violence prevention concepts including media literacy, bystander intervention, cultural relativity, and safe use of technology.

Visit the HopeWorks' website for more information about the programs and to download an application for the 2014-2015 program year.

Rain Gardens are Simple and Effective Ways to Green Landscape
Columbia Association: Rain Garden Cost Share Program
Columbia Association:
Rain Garden Cost Share Program

A rain garden is a shallow, planted depression that absorbs the water that flows from your roof, patio or yard, allowing it to drain directly into the soil.

The Columbia Association, through a grant from MD Department of Natural Resources, will pay 75% of the installation costs of rain gardens on residential property and has a landscape firm on contract for installation.

This program serves Columbia residents whose property is located in the Little Patuxent Watershed. Most properties in Harper's Choice qualify. We have several brochures available at Kahler Hall that explain the program, showing costs, templates and photos.

For more information, watch this video or email CA's Watershed Manager, John McCoy or give him a call at 410-312- 6336.

State of Our Schools in Harper's Choice
Do you wonder about the schools in Harper's Choice? How do our schools compare to other schools throughout the county, state, and country? What challenges do our schools face? Where are we succeeding? What needs improvement?

Join us on October 6 for a forum to get those questions answered and more. Participants include Superintendent Dr. Renee Foose, members of the Administrative Team at HCPSS Central Office, and principals from Longfellow Elementary, Swansfield Elementary, and Harper's Choice Middle School.

Watch for more details and mark your calendar to attend!

The Big Thank You

Thanksgiving is a day Americans set aside to give thanks for a variety of things: people, comfort, freedom.

This year, we will honor and thank the men and women of our armed forces who are serving overseas and who will be away from their families during such a special holiday.

Watch for more details about how you can say "Thank You" in a very special way, including an all-day School's Out event that will provide all that you need to write your message of thanks.

Friday, October 17 from 9AM - 3PM at Kahler Hall!
