District Awarded $7. 2 Million to Replace Old Water Pipes Within Phase 1 of the Sewer Project

Yucca Valley, CA  - On Tuesday, November 4, 2014, the  California Department of Water Resources announced that through Mojave Water Agency, Hi-Desert Water District (HDWD) has been awarded $7,200,000 from the Round 3A Proposition 84 Integrated Regional Water Management (IRWM) Drought Grant Solicitation. This award is earmarked to go towards HDWD's Capital Replacement Program (CRP) to replace all aging steel water mains within the Phase 1 boundary of the Wastewater  Reclamation Project (the Sewer Project)

HDWD will be replacing approximately 22 miles of old steel lines which can be up to 50 years old. By replacing these lines with newer, larger pipe, customers will benefit from better fire flow protection, fewer leaks, improved water quality, and increased service reliability.

"The replacement of these old water mains will reduce the amount of leaks within the system and help us conserve water during this time of drought," said Ed Muzik, HDWD General Manager. "Our goal is to have all necessary pipe replaced within Phase 1 of the Sewer Project quickly, so our customers continue to enjoy a reliable water supply as well as undisturbed new roads in the future."

As part of the Sewer Project, new roads are included in the total project cost to property owners and will be provided when Phase 1 is constructed.  This is why it is important to HDWD to complete replacing these old steel water mains as soon as possible to cause minimal impact to the new roads. Equally important is the amount of water that will be saved through the reduction of leaks.

HDWD continues to search and apply for additional grants as they become available, to help deliver the Sewer Project to property owners at the lowest possible cost.
