Newsletter 75 ~ 16th May 2014
HELLO FROM VANCOUVER

It seems an age since I last sent out a newsletter and so much seems to have happened. Moor Hall has recently held several great courses: Ruth Issett had her first full week course, with a second one happening in August, the lovely Jan Beaney was back to a full house and what a great two days that was for us all. Matthew Harris came for the first time and I shall be most disappointed as will the students if we don't get him back next year. And what with all the regular classes it has been a very busy teaching programme.

..........AND HERE I AM NOW IN A VERY WARM SUNNY VANCOUVER, with one lecture and workshop later and a family wedding to look forward to tomorrow.

I was made very welcome by the North Shore Needle Arts Guild on Tuesday evening at a lecture that I gave. I hope these smiles mean that the ladies were happy with me!!!!!

On the following day I gave a workshop to 15 lovely students. Thank you to everyone for giving me such a great time. Here are a couple of sketchbook pages from Catherine Nicholls on the left and Jeri Engen on the right.

Next week I am off to Sechelt to teach a workshop and then it will be some downtime spent with my family while the 'lads' (meaning husband and sons) go off surfing and fishing to Vancouver Island.

Meanwhile things are still happening in the UK so please read on.

Dramatic relief surfaces in Fabric

Create dramatic and permanent relief shapes in fabric using 'Shibori' ~ the simple Japanese method of steam-setting. Fabrics are tied and stitched before steaming which afterwards reveals fabulous exciting results.

Sian has been involved in creating her own stitched textile work since graduating with a degree in Embroidery. She exhibits her work with three contemporary British textile art groups: 62 group, Textile Study group and Stitch Textile Artists

She is the director of 'Distant Stitch' which she founded in 1991 and this highly acclaimed teaching school attracts students from all over the world.

I am so fortunate that she is coming to Moor Hall to teach as she brings with her teaching, an extraordinary amount of knowledge. She is able to make students feel comfortable in their own abilities as well as getting them to think outside of the box.

Visit her website to find out more about Sian and see images of her work and then get back to me to book a place on this course.

Floral and Foliage Designs

July 18th & 19th

100

Layer and combine fabrics to make a lovely cloth and then use running stitch to interpret drawings and designs made from looking at traditional and contemporary examples. You will go home with a small, very individual, beautiful piece of work informed by the art of Kantha making.

Floral and Foliage Designs is an introduction to Kantha making with Dorothy Tucker. Kantha is a Bangladeshi word for cloth, and a particular way of stitching embroidered quilts made from the good parts of old worn out saris.  A wealth designs based on flowers and leaves feature on these quilts, mostly worked entirely in variations of running stitch.

Dorothy will bring both historical and contemporary examples for you to handle and study.

By folding and stitching into layers of fabrics we will make a sample approximately A4 in size which will be lovely to handle. We will then decorate this with floral and foliage designs using just running stitch.

This workshop is open to everyone interested in hand stitching and exploring Kantha making for the first time.   If you have attended one of my Kantha courses before, do come too to extend your Kantha making skills.
