 15TH HAVANA FILM FESTIVAL NY ANNOUNCES HAVANA STAR PRIZE WINNERS AT PACKED CLOSING NIGHT CEREMONY

Best Screenplay: Melaza (Cuba) 

Special Jury Mention: No robar�s (Ecuador) 

Best Documentary: Of Kites and Borders (Mexico-U.S.-Spain)

Best Actor: Reynaldo Miravalles (Cuba)

Best Actress: Alina Rodriguez (Cuba)

 

New York, April 11, 2014- The 15th Havana Film Festival NY announced the 2014 Havana Star Prize winners during a packedClosing Night Ceremony at the New York Directors Guild Theater (DGA), followed by the New York premiere of The German Doctor / El Doctor Alem�n by Argentine director Luc�a Puenzo. In the Fiction category, the Best Feature winner was Conducta / Behavior by Ernesto Daranas (Cuba) for; Best Director went to Mexican-Spaniard director Diego Quemada-Diez for La jaula de oro / The Golden Dream, and Best Screenplay was awarded to Cuban filmmaker Carlos Lechuga for Melaza / Molasses. De cometas y fronteras / Of Kites and Borders by Yolanda Pividal won the Havana Star Prize for Best Documentary. For the first time, prizes were awarded for Best Actor to Reynaldo Miravalles for Esther en alguna parte / Esther Somewhere, and Best Actress to Alina Rodriguez for Conducta / Behavior. A Special Jury Mention went to No Robar�s... A menos que sea necesario / You Shall Not Steal, a feature by Ecuadorean filmmaker Viviana Cordero. The jury included Laura de la Uz, Deborah Kampmeier, and Donald Rabinovich for Fiction categories; and Alfonso Diaz, Juan C�ceres, and Luis Naguill for Documentary films.

 

The 15th HFFNY showcased 45 films from and about Latin America, the Caribbean, and Latinos in the United States and welcomed 26 visiting filmmakers from all over the continent. This year's line-up included a record 24 Cuban films spanning 55 years of filmmaking in the island. The festival also featured films from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Dominican Republic, Spain, Guatemala, Panama, Puerto Rico and the U.S., screening throughout Manhattan, Queens, and The Bronx.

 

The presenting sponsor of the 15th HFFNY was NBC Universal / Telemundo NY. Additional sponsorship was provided by El Diario La Prensa, Pepsi Co., Wing, Xael Charters, Wing, Raymi Restaurant, Flowers by Special Arrangements, Enrola TV, Queens Latino, Rockamedia, and Copacabana Night Club.
