Federal regulators are planning for a permanent HIPAA audit program that will begin next year, according to Leon Rodriguez, director of the Department of Health and Human Services' Office for Civil Rights (OCR).
OCR announced the audit program would begin in fiscal 2014, which begins October 1st. OCR officials also indicated that business associates, as well as covered entities, will be audited in the permanent program because they are liable for HIPAA compliance under the HIPAA Omnibus Rule.
