Message from the Chair

Starting in November, I will begin my new position as vice president for adult policy at the Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute for Texas. This is an opportunity to work on issues that have been at the center of my professional interests for nearly four decades.

I’ve been at USF for 24 years and during my four years as chair of the Department of Health Policy and Management, I have tried to make the experience of students our highest priority, in teaching, advising and creating professional opportunities. It has been a privilege to get to teach our students and to work alongside the HPM faculty and staff.

Speaking of students, it is my pleasure to share with you a newly released video. As you will see, the video shares testimonials from students, faculty and alumni on why HPM is the best place to learn, gain experience in the field and address emerging issues in health care. After viewing it, we hope you’ll share the video with colleagues and other potential prospective students.

As a department, we will work carefully and intentionally to ensure that there is a smooth transition to new leadership.

Thank you for all that you do to support the department. We truly appreciate your involvement!

Sincerely,

John P. Petrila, JD, LLM

During the fall 2016 semester, HMSA will provide its members with a speaker series and newly minted professional development workshops, both to be held monthly. Jason Altmire, the vice president of policy for Florida Blue, spoke at the first event on September 13, 2016. The October speaker will feature Bland Eng, the chief executive officer of Brandon Regional Hospital.

The professional development series for the fall semester will focus on three separate topics: technology and communication, resume and cover letter writing, and professional branding. HMSA is also dedicated to their relationship with the local chapter of ACHE and encourages students to join and become involved.

HMSA supports the development of scholarship, leadership, and professionalism within its members, and their programming supports these values. Alumni please “like” HMSA on Facebook to keep abreast of its continuing success!

Cauchavius Watts, a Robert Wood Johnson intern

Cauchavius Watts, a dual MHA/MPH student, spent his summer gaining valuable knowledge and experience as a Robert Wood Johnson intern.

“My internship with PSE&G Children’s Hospital (CSH) in New Brunswick, N.J. permitted me the opportunity to shadow with several C-suite executives of inpatient and outpatient departments throughout my experience," he said.  "My project involved researching best practices for pediatric transitions with the hope of finding a rationale for the development of a transitional care clinic that would facilitate continuous care or set up consultations for specialized care coordination based on the Pediatric Medical Complexity Algorithm which categorizes rehabilitation patients by degree of medical complexity.”

Watts said he was drawn to this opportunity because “Robert Wood Johnson is a highly reputable name in health care research and health programs. The RWJ Barnabas Health system is also one of the largest in the country; having recently acquired CSH…I was also attracted to this opportunity because of its commitment to diversity and inclusion of minority populations, particularly in health care administration. Furthermore, I am keen to begin my professional life as an early careerist on the East coast, so this organization allowed me to experience life in this region of the U.S.”

Jessica Ryan, PhD candidate, presents research at the 2016 FPHA Annual Educational Conference

“I thoroughly enjoyed attending the Florida Public Health Association’s 2016 Annual Education Conference. It was nice to gain experience presenting my research, but there were additional benefits such as getting to know the student presenters from other departments and making contacts in other universities. Since the focus of the conference is on health of Floridians, it felt like everyone who attended was working towards the same goal. This lent itself to a feeling of community that I haven’t gotten at larger conferences. There were enough interesting breakout sessions I had a hard time choosing which ones to attend. Overall, it was a great experience and I’m happy I had the chance to participate in the conference,” Ryan said.

Alumni News
HPM launches the Alumni Mentor Program

HPM is committed to the professional development of its students. In addition to coursework that integrates the value of professionalism, the department has been actively building partnerships with the community and has also worked with HMSA to provide a professional development workshop series on topics such as resume writing, elevator speeches and social media branding.

Considering the variety of experience and highly specialized expertise of HPM alumni, the department wanted to integrate alumni with the professional goals of the department. In order to do this, the Alumni Mentor Program was launched that matches current 2nd-year students with experienced alumni to participate in a mentoring relationship. This program provides student mentees the opportunity to build their career network while learning from the experiences of more seasoned professionals. Mentors can re-connect with the department by sharing their career knowledge and experiences with aspiring health policy and management professionals.

In its inaugural year,18 mentor-mentee pairs were matched. As one alumni mentor wrote of why she volunteered, “[it’s] an opportunity to assist a current public health student as they embark upon their career.” Another mentor spoke of his mentors throughout his career, and how this was an opportunity to switch roles and give back to the next generation. Students are equally excited, citing how this is a professional development opportunity to learn how to navigate the career application process, explore other industry areas, learn about themselves in the process and reflect on what skills they need to hone before entering the workforce.

Thank you to all of the alumni who volunteered to participate! To get involved next year, contact [email protected].
