Habitat Heroes: Cynthia Herman

Have you ever heard of an "executive volunteer?" That's Cynthia Herman's official title at Habitat NCR thanks to her dedicated service in our office over the past nine years. The Winnipeg native and proud grandmother of six not only donates her valued computer skills two days a week, but many of her photographs are used in our marketing materials. We asked her why volunteering is so close to her heart.

Question: What keeps you coming back each week?

Answer: It's the people in the office and helping the volunteers. I'm developed great friendships and I enjoy helping to keep things running smoothly.

Q: How did your title of "Executive Volunteer" come about?

A: Marilyn (Habitat NCR's Executive Assistant) gave it to me about two years ago when we were trying to find a way to identify me on a name tag. She said that just putting "volunteer" didn't cut it. She suggested we add "executive" to it and it stuck!

Q: What's your favourite memory at Habitat NCR?

A: Outside of the office, it's going to our annual reception at the U.S. Ambassador's Residence before the (Steel Toes and Stilettos) Gala, but inside the office it was when they told me that I was going to receive the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for my volunteer service a few months ago. It meant so much to me that the staff at Habitat nominated me and thought so highly of me. It was a great honour.

Looking Back: Habitat NCR Makes Blitz Build History
Ed Shreyer Work Project houses
(Habitat NCR File Photo)

As we celebrate Habitat NCR's 20th anniversary, we're looking back at our builds over the years. One of our most ambitious projects took place in 2002 when we launched a blitz build to complete eight homes in eight days.

Named for the former Governor General, the Ed Schreyer Work Project took place from August 9-16, 2002 on a site between Goth Avenue and D'aoust Avenue in Ottawa South.

The blitz build, which was the 8th annual build of its kind in Canada at the time, created housing for 19 children and involved hundreds of volunteers, donors and sponsors from the Ottawa area and North America.

Special guests included former Governor General Ed Schreyer, Habitat Canada's Patron, and his wife Lily, who rolled up their sleeves to donate their time and talents. Millard Fuller, Habitat for Humanity International's founder and former president, was also on hand for the Dedication Ceremony.
