We Can Build It!: Our first-ever "Women in Wood" Women Build Day on June 26 was a huge success with more than 20 people from the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) on site. The team built two picnic tables for our volunteers to use and raised a wall on our urban Aboriginal build.

Celebrating 20 Years of Building Homes and Building Hope
Thanks to the dedicated support of our donors, sponsors, tradespeople and volunteers, Habitat for Humanity NCR has been making homeownership a reality for hard-working, low-income families in our region since 1993. We're celebrating our 20th anniversary this year with special events, tributes and profiles of the people who make it possible to build safe, decent and affordable homes right here in our community!

Our build of three homes on Nantes Street in Orlans is going well, thanks to our volunteers, corporate teams, tradespeople, suppliers and especially Ken, our Construction Manager.

Each house is taking starting to take shape and the windows are being installed this week. The three homes will be completed this fall.

We have been pleased to have many corporate teams volunteering on site to date, including Soloway Wright, CMHC, GWL, Western Union, Giant Tiger, Toromont, Realtors Care, Genworth, Underwriters Laboratories, Old Navy and many more. We also welcomed the U.S. Ambassador to Canada David Jacobson, Mrs. Julie Jacobson and staff from the U.S. Embassy.

Go to Habitat NCR's Facebook page for regular updates of the construction progress and see photos of our volunteers and corporate teams working hard to make homeownership a reality for low-income families in our community.

Volunteers Complete ReNew It Deck Project for Abbeyfield House Residents

Abbeyfield ReNew It Deck 2013

Earlier this month, Habitat NCR's hard-working volunteers constructed a deck for Abbeyfield House, a non-profit housing option for seniors that offers a small-scale care facility with private rooms, food and the support of a house coordinator.

The 10 residents had limited access to the outdoors at their Victorian home located on Parkdale Avenue beside Parkdale United Church.

Thanks to our partnerships with Oakwood Renovation Experts, BOMA Ottawa and the RBC Foundation, Habitat NCR was able to build a 14' x 22' deck through ReNew It, our repair and renovation program. This project created a respite for the seniors and it will help them enjoy the outdoors for years to come.

Looking Back: Women Build 2007

Womens Build 2013

As we celebrate Habitat NCR's 20th anniversary, we're looking back at our builds over the years. In 2007, we held our first-ever Women Build in the National Capital Region.

The Women Build Program pomotes the involvement of women in the construction of Habitat homes by hosting build projects with the majority of the planning and execution undertaken by female volunteers. The Women Build Program isn't about "excluding men," but it is all about "including women."

The build, located on White Cedar Street in Stittsville, made the dream of homeownership a reality for two families and involved hundreds of volunteers, donors and sponsors. Thanks to everyone who was involved!
