We are looking for volunteers!

Volunteers are needed to help complete the four homes in Orleans. All four homes are in the finishing stages of interior work, so you won't be out in the cold!. We are looking for available volunteers between now and the end of November.

If you are available, please contact Peggy Winstan via email:

Gift from the Heart

The magic of a Gift from the Heart is that it's a different kind of gift. It doesn't come wrapped with ribbons and bows, and you'll never hold it in your hands.

Whether it's for family, friends, clients or a teacher, giving a Gift from the Heart from Habitat NCR will help us fulfill our mission of building affordable homes for Ottawa families.

We will send you a charitable tax receipt and a greeting card so you can let a loved one know that a Habitat Gift from the Heart has been made in their name.

Third Party Fundraising Events

It has been a busy summer and fall for Habitat NCR.

In addition to the Blitz Build home, other fundraisers included the Canadian Stone Carving Festival, the Zombie Run for Humanity, and the Steel Toes & Stilettos Gala.

Canadian Stone Carving Festival:

The Canadian Stone Carving Festival brought together

local artisans and professional stonemasons, many of whom are currently working on the West Block of Parliament. The stone artists had 48 hours to carve stone blocks provided by Merkley Supply Ltd. The carvings were then auctioned with proceeds going to Habitat NCR.

In total, 27 carvings were auctioned for more than a $10,000 donation to Habitat NCR.

Zombie Run for Humanity:

The second annual Zombie Run for Humanity took place October 4th in a field transformed into a post-zombie apocalypse playground by co-creators Susan Vacheresse and Ryan Ricci and members of the Habitat Build Committee.

This year's event grew in participants, and in obstacles, with a water feature, pallet wall, and several other barriers to safety from the zombies. Also added were food trucks and post-race celebratory suds from Kichesippi Beer. Live 88.5 came on board to provide live entertainment for participants waiting to run, or in their post-run cool-down phase.

Next year's event will feature a change in venue, more obstacles, and even more zombies! Circle Oct 3rd on your calendar and start preparing now.

An update on Habitat NCR
There have been a lot of changes since the last HabiChat update. Among those changes are some new faces in the office, and now a new office location!

We have participated in a Blitz Build charitable fundraiser, were the recipients of several third-party fundraiser events, opened a Pop-Up Furniture Sale, hosted our annual Steel Toes & Stilettos Gala, and moved office and ReStore East locations (from Walkley to Belfast Road).

All of this to help raise money to build more homes for hard-working, low-income families in the Ottawa area. Since 1993, Habitat NCR has been helping local families break the cycle of poverty. We are presently completing four  builds in Orleans, and look forward to building five homes next year.

There are countless ways to get involved - either by volunteering on the build site, or by serving on one of our various committees. You can donate used goods and building material to the ReStores, or shop for fantastic deals to help with your home renovation project. Or, you could encourage your workplace to get involved through one of our many sponsorship initiatives.

Family Intake for Two Years

Habitat NCR is presently accepting family applications for both 2015 and 2016! With plans to build five homes in 2015, there has never been a better time to apply to become a Habitat partner family.

Habitat partner families contribute to the construction of their own homes and then repay a long-term, no-interest and no down-payment mortgage. Mortgage payments are geared to income, assuring affordability.

To qualify, family income before taxes must be between $43,000 and $65,000. You must have a stable work history of full-time employment, be a first-time homeowner, not have an overwhelming amount of debt and have a decent credit rating. Preference will be given to families with small children, though all are encouraged to apply.

If you think you or someone you know may meet this criteria, please visit http://habitatncr.com/index.php/about/homeownership/apply-now and apply online. If you need assistance with completing your application, contact Marilyn at (613) 749-9950, ext 225.

New office and ReStore East location

In case you've missed the news, the Habitat affiliate office and Walkley ReStore have relocated to 768 Belfast Road, near Trainyards.

In late October, the ReStore closed its doors at Walkley after more than twelve years in preparation for a move to a more centralized location for ReStore customers.

The new location offers better customer parking, better accessibility, and a better floor plan, including a furniture showroom.

The location was first used as our Pop-Up Furniture ReStore Sale this summer. It was such a great space that we decided to bring the rest of the merchandise over.

You can access the new location from the 417 by taking the St. Laurent exit south, turning onto Belfast; or by the Riverside exit south to Industrial, and east through the Trainyards to Belfast. We are located two doors down from the Tim Horton's.

Grand ReOpening Weekend

The "Grand ReOpening" will take place from Thursday, November 13th to Sunday, November 16th with 20% everything in the ReStore, along with door prizes and in-store specials.

Our ReStore West location, located at 7 Enterprise Drive near the intersection of Hunt Club and Merivale, remains open for all of our home reno project needs.

Hours of operation of both ReStore locations are: Monday to Saturday, 9-5:30pm; Sunday, 12-5pm.

Blitz Build raises almost $200,000

It was not your typical Habitat for Humanity build.

The Blitz Build home was a partnership between the Greater Ottawa Home Builders' Association (GOHBA), Algonquin College and Habitat NCR to raise money for Habitat NCR.

Hundreds of GOHBA members - Ottawa-area contractors and suppliers - provided labour and building materials, while more than one hundred students from twelve Algonquin College programs provided support services to the volunteers, including security, food services, and even massages therapy.

Over the course of three days in May, volunteers dealt with below-seasonal temperatures, rain, sleet, and darkness as they worked around the clock for 72 hours to complete the home.

Starting from a pre-laid foundation, work began as Mayor Jim Watson kicked off the build with a news conference. Just three days later, the home was finished with only a few minor touch-ups needed on the inside. Once those were complete, the house was put on the market.

Susan Vacheresse of Re/Max Absolute Realty sold the Tartan Homes model, located in Barrhaven, for $426,000, netting almost $200,000 for Habitat NCR. The sale closed October 31st.

Proceeds of the sale will help fund Habitat NCR's ongoing operations, including the construction of five homes next year.

Steel Toes and Stilettos Gala

Habitat NCR's premier fundraising event, the Steel Toes & Stilettos Gala, was held at the Canadian War Museum on October 18th. The 9th Annual Gala, presented by BMO, featured a change in venue, format and entertainment, but retained its great prizes, live auction packages, and networking opportunities.

This year's venue provided an impressive and historic backdrop, with military tanks and planes from Canada's military history. CTV Morning Live's Lianne Laing provided emcee services, while the Jackson Miles Band warmed the crowd with a solo acoustic set before dinner and a lively and diverse set for Gala-goers to dance the night away.

Live auction packages included Redblack's Quarterback Henry Burris presenting season's tickets and an autographed jersey and ball, an Ottawa Senators package with a signed Karlsson jersey, two tickets anywhere Porter flies, among others.

Blackjack tables opened after dinner and were packed all evening, as was the dance floor late into the night!

As tickets sold out approximately one month before this event, be sure to secure your tickets early for next year's 10th Annual Steel Toes & Stilettos Gala.
