Greetings!
I have a confession to make. I came to Habitat CFC, well over two years ago, with the conviction that every person deserves a decent, stable, affordable home. I had a solid understanding of the need and years of experience working in a leadership role with high performing non-profit organizations. I was thrilled to join the Habitat CFC team, with a commitment to do whatever I could to improve our community and make the greatest difference for those most in need. But I had no idea how to build a house!
This summer I was determined to change that. I privately decided that I would try to get out and help build as often as I could. I know that Habitat CFC does a great job, but I wanted to experience, first hand, what thousands of volunteers experience every year. As the CEO, it was humbling to have to rely on others to instruct and supervise me, but that’s exactly what I did.
I still don’t know how to build a house. But I know what it feels like to work alongside talented, committed and extremely capable project managers and wonderful volunteers who each have their own unique reasons for giving their time. I saw how much extra effort goes into building homes that aren’t just “good enough” but that are better than they need to be. I know what it’s like to be dirty and exhausted, while feeling proud and accomplished at the same time.
I still have so much more to learn, but there is no better classroom than a Habitat CFC build site. Maybe we’ll be out there working together someday soon!
Best Wishes,
