What Happens When a Family Leaves their Habitat Home?

Greetings!

This past month we held two somewhat unique Habitat CFC home dedications. Of course, every dedication of a new home for a hard-working and deserving local family is extremely special, but these were a little different because they marked the second time that families (including the Rodriguez-Sanchez family above) were welcomed into these homes.

We often get asked what happens to a Habitat CFC home when the family that purchased it decides, for whatever reason, to move on. The most common question, undoubtedly related to the popularity of HGTV, is whether our homeowners can “flip” their Habitat CFC homes. They actually can’t. When Habitat CFC sells a home, the deed comes with two restrictions. The first ensures that Habitat CFC has the option to buy back the house. The second requires that if a home is sold on the market, it must remain “affordable.”

Most often, Habitat CFC decides to exercise the buyback option, as it provides us with the opportunity to completely refurbish the house and sell it to another hard-working local family, effectively doubling the impact of every home we build. Theoretically, since Habitat CFC builds quality homes that should be around for many years, this could happen several times, dramatically increasing the positive difference made by Habitat CFC volunteers and donors.

When we dedicated this month’s refurbished homes, we noted that our families would be blessed with twice the love since their homes had already nurtured their first families and were now beginning to embrace the second. Isn't that a wonderful thing?

Best Wishes,

Up in Flames

We held our Annual Families' Picnic this month which was made even more special because the Velez family and the Herrera family got to "burn their mortgages" after making the final payments on their Habitat CFC homes!

After move-in day, this is the next best day in a Habitat homeowner's journey because they officially own their own home. Habitat CFC families put in a lot of hard work and Habitat CFC staff give a lot of support throughout the home-ownership process, and we couldn't be more proud when that hard work and dedication pays off.

A Special Delivery

On July 15, we held a Home Dedication Ceremony to celebrate the Kayembe Family moving into their refurbished Habitat CFC home in Bridgeport. Our families work hard to get to this day which is why we love celebrating it.

And this Dedication day got even better when UPS  employees made a surprise visit to deliver the first packages to the family's new home containing some cool UPS swag and, of course, the key!
