June 2017 Newsletter

Greetings!

June has been designated as National Homeownership Month – a time to recognize the benefits of homeownership on families, communities and our nation. Habitat for Humanity sees the positive impact here in Fairfield County every day as hardworking families improve their lives through secure, affordable homeownership in welcoming neighborhoods.

Unfortunately, there is a bit of irony in this month’s designation. June is a month for celebrating the benefits of homeownership, yet it is also a month in which some well publicized reports were issued indicating that affordable housing is beyond the reach of a growing number of Americans. According to a recent Harvard report on the state of the nation’s housing, nearly 19 million Americans spend more than 50% of their income on housing - forcing sacrifices in other key budget areas, including food and health care. A report by the National Housing Conference also noted the increasing number of Americans who are “housing cost burdened” but showed that only 16% of owners are burdened compared to 25% of renters.

The lack of affordable, safe, stable housing is challenging millions of individuals and families. Building decent housing and the opportunity for affordable homeownership is an extremely effective means of addressing this issue. In recognition of National Homeownership Month, Habitat for Humanity of Coastal Fairfield County recommits itself to this work. With your help and support we will continue to change lives and lift communities! And if you or someone you know is in need of affordable housing in Fairfield County, please click here to learn about our Future Homeownership Program.

Sincerely,

Engaging Younger Youth

Habitat CFC recently received a $4,000 “Engaging Younger Youth” matching grant from State Farm Insurance to expand its Youth United program.

Throughout the past year, our Youth United group utilized $1,000 in capacity-building funds to engage younger students and raise at least $4,000 as well as perform community outreach in order to receive the grant. Youth United members chose to use the funding towards sponsoring their 5th Habitat CFC home in Bridgeport.

Click here to read more about all the hard work our Youth United members did to receive this grant. We're very proud of their dedication and achievements!
