May 2017 Newsletter

Greetings!

Houses come in all shapes and sizes. There is the brick one, the grey one, the ranch or the colonial. There’s the one on the corner, the one with the porch, the house with the blue door or the green mailbox. These descriptions may be accurate but they miss the one reason why a Habitat CFC home is always the most special house on the street. Ours is the one that was built with love.

Countless hands go into the construction of every Habitat CFC home – hands of dedicated volunteers who give hours of their time and talent to provide a stable home for a hard working local family and help them to achieve the dream of affordable home ownership. The hands are connected to hard working employees from local companies, committed members of churches and other community organizations, or simply generous individuals and families who strive to give back. Some volunteers come out once or twice a year, while a very special group of Habitat volunteers build with us on a monthly or even weekly basis like Larry Hartshorn (pictured above).

The volunteerism of those who help us build is complemented by many others who give time to our family service efforts, the ReStore, Board governance, fundraising, etc. Habitat CFC could never fulfill the many facets of its mission without all of these capable, committed and most appreciated hands!

The many reasons that over a thousand people volunteer each year with Habitat CFC are as varied as their individual backgrounds and personalities. What these great people all share, however, are enormous hearts and the drive to make a difference. As Mohammed Ali said, “Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.” Please join us.

Best,

She Nailed It!

Habitat for Humanity of Coastal Fairfield County hosted its 2nd Annual “She Nailed It!” Social and Competition on May 11 to benefit Women Build’s 13th sponsored home in Fairfield County.

Twenty teams of women competed in a ladies-only nail-hammering relay with the coveted “Bedazzled Hammers” going to the champions - Team Googly Eyes - consisting of Amy Schneider, Cat Edwards, Suzanne Fandel, and Gilza Smith.

Congratulations and thank you to all participating teams and spectators who helped raise approximately $30,000 for our Women Build home!

Groundbreaking Ceremony

Saturday, May 20 was an exciting day for the Quinones family and the Boglio-Diaz family as friends, family, and well-wishers including State Representative Steve Stafstrom came out to celebrate the groundbreaking of what will soon be their new two-family home in Bridgeport!

The Quinones family's home will be the 5th Habitat CFC home sponsored by our Youth United group.

Meet our Newest Staff Member

Habitat CFC is pleased to welcome Chris Frattarola as its newest Construction Project Manager.

Chris grew up in Stratford and currently lives in Oxford with his wife Kate. He ran his own tile business for the past 12 years before coming to Habitat CFC.

"I'm very happy to be a part of Habitat and put my skills to good use while doing good for the community and learning more myself. I'm also glad to be part of the Youth Build program and to impart useful building skills to the young adults participating, so they will soon have marketable skills and be able to get jobs themselves."
